Terzo album per i tedeschi Frigoris, che si rifanno vivi a distanza di tre anni dall'uscita di "Wind" con il concept album "Nur Ein Moment...". Per essere più precisi si tratta della prima parte di un viaggio intrapreso da un personaggio giunto al bivio, vicino a gettarsi sotto un treno, ma che in un solo momento (come espresso nel titolo del disco) viene catapultato all'interno del proprio mondo interiore, trovandosi faccia a faccia con i possibili scenari e le possibili consequenze scaturibili da tale fatidica decisione. Quale finale lo attende? Quello programmato? Oppure schiarendosi i pensieri il destino prenderà un'altra direzione?

Le sonorità plasmate nei pezzi ruotano attorno a questo attimo, così breve ma talmente intenso da sembrare infinito. L'agitarsi e la mutazione in corsa delle sensazioni che si accalcano nella mente e nel cuore del protagonista sono quindi elementi conduttori fondamentali per l'evoluzione della musica stessa. Il black metal, odiernamente meno pagano e più atmosferico, dai risvolti naturalistici e post-black con il quale dobbiamo misurarci sprofonda in maniera disinvolta e intima nell'animo, eppure non è poi immediato quanto possa sembrare.

Vi è una sorta di meditabonda e sinuosa formula che avvolge l'incedere elegante dell'apertura "Et In Arcadia Ego", corrotta dall'abrasivo cantato in lingua madre, che andrebbe assorbita in più passaggi per apprezzarne la pregevole fattura e la brillante capacità di turbare. Il dibattersi fragile e contorto di chi non ha certezza esplode nelle melodie epico-tragiche di "Himeros", mentre il dolore e la sofferenza assumono una conformazione più netta e aggravante nel greve passo scandito da "Trúwen". L'animosa ma malinconica "Lichtträger" diviene invece una infervorata fusione di queste sensazioni, nella quale emergono disagio e insicurezza dal senso di attanagliamento generale. Infine vi è un momento in cui lasciarsi cadere e cullare nell'agrodolce rete di "Persona", prima che l'umore depressivo rialzi la testa, liberandosi e spegnendosi successivamente nella più decisamente più amara "Station".

"Nur Ein Moment..." è un ascolto da metabolizzare, in cui le sfumature — come le brevi sessioni vocali quasi in parlato contenute in "Himeros" e le raffinate intrusioni del violoncello all'interno del già pregiato tessuto sonoro — fanno realmente la differenza. C'è però da sottolineare che le armi dei Frigoris vengono sfruttate al meglio, grazie anche all'ottimo supporto garantito dalla produzione pulita ed equilibrata che Daniel Heyn (Secrets Of The Moon, Primordial e The Ruins Of Beverast) ha donato all'album.

Un autore nostrano cantava «capire tu non puoi, tu chiamale se vuoi emozioni»: sono proprio loro che guidano la musica dei Frigoris e che sicuramente vi attireranno verso l'ascolto.

Frigoris après le très bon album Wind sorti en 2013 revient en 2016 avec son nouvel album Nur ein Moment... sorti encore une fois via Hypnotic Dirge Records. Frigoris est un groupe allemand actif depuis 2007 situé à Essen qui a sorti en 2010 son premier album Nach dem Krieg et son deuxième album Wind en 2013. Le groupe évolue dans un registre de pagan / black metal.

Cette fois avec Nur ein Moment... on assiste un double changement pour le groupe. Le premier changement consiste dans la musique. Frigoris évolue et lorgne plutôt dans le post-black metal que dans le pagan. Thématiquement on voit ce changement, et ce sera le deuxième, dans les textes. Frigoris s’attaque cette fois à un concept album. Mieux encore. Il s’agit d’un concept général et Nur ein Moment... en est la première partie ou le premier cd, si l’on veut.

Nur ein Moment... ou ‘Just a moment’ c’est le voyage dans le monde intérieur du protagoniste lors de son dernier moment, celui qui précède son suicide. Dans cet instant fatal le protagoniste cours face à un train et il se trouve soudainement transporté face à des visions qui lui montrent les répercussions de son acte. Il se trouve aussi face à face avec différents concepts de morale et il a la possibilité de prendre une nouvelle décision, ou pas.

Nur ein Moment... est le début de cette histoire. Il s’agit d’une mise en situation, une sorte de prologue où l’on trouve le protagoniste face au train qui s’approche et avec le désir d’en finir. Ce train peut être vrai, vu les textes et la pochette de l’album où l’on voit des rails, mais peut être aussi la métaphore du ‘train du destin’. On vit en suivant des rails et on sait que notre course est destinée à s’arrêter tôt ou tard. Dans le voyage la première partie « augenschlag » le protagoniste rencontre Hymeros qui est la personnification du désir amoureux et Trúwen qui est la personnification de la fois religieuse / spirituelle.

Ensuite Lichtträger entame la deuxième partie où la "lumière de la bougie" représente à la fois le passé et le future du protagoniste. Les souvenirs se mélangent et on ne sait plus s’il s’agit de souvenirs, donc du passé, ou de songes / aspirations et donc du futur. De ce que l’aurait pu être. Persona nous montre le protagoniste face au train, face à sa destinée. Le titre « persona » n’est pas anodin. On appelait « persona » dans le théâtre grec ancien l’acteur et celui-ci portait un masque. Donc de lui on ne voyait que le rôle qu’il jouait ou le masque qu’il portait. Persona dans le langage actuelle est l’individu tel qu’il apparaît publiquement, tel qu’il apparaît aux autres, mais l’individu ne se résume pas à ceci. Notre protagoniste se trouve face à lui-même, face à une partie, sa facette particulière. Que va-t-il faire ? Il persévéra dans l’idée de se suicider ? On ne le saura peut-être que sur la suite de cet album.

Musicalement Frigoris présente un album sombre et assez monolithique. La couler est la même pendant tout le long de l’album et c’est assez sombre. Pas froid dans le sens du black metal tout cour mais assez sombre quand même. Les titres se suivent mais se ressemblent et ceci afin de surligner le propos et de le répéter. Certes il y a des ouvertures ici et là qui aèrent les chansons mais là où la mélancolie semble devenir trop longue, il y a tout de suite une accélération qui s’instaure. Une autre ouverture est soulignée par exemple par le chant de Melanie S 'special guest' sur le titre Himeros. Comme dit il s’agit du désir amoureux et alors on a le duo vocal homme / femme. A la guitare électrique s’ajoutent aussi par moment des violons et la guitare sèche. Ces insertions sont savamment utilisées et donnent un aspect mélancolique et automnal à l’album. La voix black est superbe et se fond à merveille dans l’ensemble.

Frigoris effectue une prouesse étant donné le thème traité et le genre dont il évolue. Sa prouesse est celle de ne pas tomber dans le ‘depressif black metal’ ou dans des tons plus gothiques. Il y a toujours un équilibre entre le côté sombre et un fil d’espoir qui est toujours présent comme en filigrane. Et c’est peut-être pour cela qu’il y a un thème récurrent qui perce par moments comme une sorte de leitmotiv et qui nous dit que peut-être tout n’est pas perdu pour le protagoniste et pour chacun d’entre nous. Ou pas.

Frigoris avec Nur ein Moment... signe un très bon album qui innove par rapport à Wind qui était aussi un très bon album. Il innove par la forme et le contenu mais on reconnaît évidemment la patte du groupe. Le projet d’un concept sur plusieurs albums (pour le moment deux…) est très ambitieux mais vu le très bon résultat de ce premier effort on ne peut que rester sur notre faim en attendant la suite.

Německé kvarteto Frigoris nepatří k nikterak nápadným formacím a minimálně na první pohled se řadí jen k dalším z mnoha. Kapela razící cestu atmosférického black metalu s přírodním zabarvením nevybočuje a hraje si to své, bez výrazné posluchačské odezvy a tisíců prodaných nahrávek. Šest let starý dlouhohrající debut zůstal bez povšimnutí a bylo to až „Wind“ z před tří let, které dokázalo jméno kapely z podpodzemí vytáhnout alespoň o patro výš. Téhle desce jsme se věnovali také my a Frigoris mohli být spokojeni, ne každá začínající formace od nás odejde s výrazně nadprůměrným hodnocením. Názor tehdy recenzujících kolegů nebudu ani podepisovat, ani vyvracet, deskou jsem se proposlouchal jen letmo, a to až za účelem, jak k novince přistupovat. Tři roky jsou přece dlouhá doba a stát se mohlo cokoli. Ta největší změna se ale nakonec týká obalu, mezi námi dosti příšerné slátaniny se zjevnými grafickými prohřešky.

Frigoris se věnují přírodně laděnému atmosférickému blacku a nejinak je tomu na novince „Nur ein Moment…“. Zde kapela předkládá šestici kompozic, které nemají daleko k atakování desetiminutové hrací doby. Jaké ony skladby jsou? V první řadě podobné. Podobné ladění, podobná tempa, žádné zkratkovité manévry a matení posluchače, „Nur ein Moment…“ je jedna velká jistota. Nezradí, avšak pro svou přílišnou sevřenost nedokáže ani překvapit. Stejně jako překvapivosti se Frigoris zřekli také invence. Atmosférický black je plný generičnosti, přesto se najdou výjimky, které přichází s ozvláštňujícími prvky, jež lze chápat alespoň za sympatickou snahu bránící se ustrnutosti. Němci se ovšem ani nesnaží, pozorný a otevřeně hledící jsem byl doufám dostatečně. Přesto, neochota inovovat a překvapovat není automatickým důvodem k odsudku.

Atmosférický black metal v podání Němců působí poměrně striktně. Metalové pasáže jsou s vysokou pravidelností prokládány typickou žánrovou sounáležitostí, akustickými vsuvkami, jež jsou tradičně dedikovány přírodním krásám. Obě složky, metalová a akustická, jsou odděleny striktně, bez potřeby proplétat a hledat jemnosti cestu skrze metalové hromobití. Frigoris však přesto skládají poměrně zručně, separovanosti zmiňovaných složek navzdory. Posluchačovu pozornost udržují hlavně kytary, které konstantně přechází mezi povedenými harmoniemi, byť – opět nutno podotknout – stěží objevnými. K jednoznačným přednostem „Nur ein Moment…“ patří vývoj jednotlivých skladeb, a to po celé délce bez spatřitelných záseků. Je tato skutečnost jedním ze základních stavebních kamenů pro vydařenou atmosféru? Zcela jistě, také na ní celé album stojí. Především proto se příjemně poslouchá a proto je snadné se přes nemalý počet nedostatků obstojně přenést.

Před sebou mám album, které disponuje velmi slušnou poslouchatelností a solidním skladatelským umem projevujícím se konstantně, především v rámci metalových pasáží. Ty akustické lze častokrát označit za nevýjimečné, udržovací. Jsou povinností vůči tezím kapelním i stylovým. V rámci žánrových vod patří Frigoris k tomu lepšímu, rozhodně však ne mezi špičku, tedy má-li být měřítkem pro hodnocení současné formy kapely právě „Nur ein Moment…“. Nepříliš silné pocity možná vyvolává silná konkurence v mém současném přehrávači, třeba je to i tím, že z podobného ranku jsem letos slyšel výrazně lepší nahrávky. Nebo na mě stále nepřišel podzim a já chci být na neobjevný atmoblack zlý, co já vím.

I would love so much to give this album the highest mark, but I simply can’t... This is a very beautiful release, but we are talking about Black Metal after all, so is the word “beautiful” the right one which you would like to find in such a review? Of course, sometimes it might fit, but generally, when I’m going to listen to BM, I expect some other words to be used while describing an album... Of course, Frigoris is a little more than that - the German band is described as Pagan Black Metal. Besides, they base their lyrics on nature a lot, so it’s not surprising that the music is absolutely melodic and especially atmospheric. Basically you can call “Nur ein Moment...” as Atmospheric or even Post-Black Metal, and you definitely won’t be too far from the truth. There are a lot of slow and melancholic parts in here that are totally atmospheric. There are many nostalgic feelings in the aura of the release. You can surely find some similarities with Agalloch or Lunar Aurora and many bands, which orient their creativity to Post-BM or even Blackgaze styles. But keep in mind that Frigoris is much more BM then the latter, even though they are far from any occult Death/Black either. It’s not only because atmosphere and slowness (or average rhythm) dominates against speed and aggressiveness - it’s generally another level. Unfortunately, it’s not for my taste that much. The question for the end would be: should I value it among the similar genre or the entire BM scene instead? Both answers should be “yes”. The problem is that there are better albums in both categories... It’s absolutely nicely made, the music is gorgeous and the cold atmosphere/aura is fascinating. Simply beautiful... but that’s not enough. I don’t see the album standing on the Olympus of the genre. It probably will give just short-term satisfaction for most of the listeners, as I don’t think it will stand the test of time...

3e album pour les Allemands de FRIGORIS, à un rythme régulier d’un album tous les trois ans. Le son ici est plus puissant, la maîtrise instrumentale peut-être plus poussée, mais l’approche mélodique de la musique n’a dans l’ensemble pas vraiment changé…

Car FRIGORIS continue de faire un Black mélodique, teinté d’atmosphères légères, où les guitares sont en premier plan sans jamais se montrer envahissantes. Bref, une visibilité musicale ici tout à fait pertinente et, certes, consensuelle.

La construction musicale est de qualité : de nombreux breaks, bien fichus, qui offrent des structures assez riches où les voix interviennent quand il le faut, pas tout le temps. La voix Black est d’ailleurs de qualité, assez puissante et bien mixée. Cela permet de générer des morceaux, à la fois assez intenses, mais très empreints de subtilité, voire de mélancolie par moments. On reconnaîtrait presque du COLDWORLD !

Aux guitares s’ajoutent des violons et de la guitare sèche, encore une fois judicieusement positionnés. Sur un peu plus de 52 minutes de musique, c’est plaisant ! On s’ennuie d’autant moins que les compositions, sans être franchement marquantes d’un point de vue de l’inspiration, sont toutes de qualité et vraiment agréables.

Après un début plus clairement païen, il semblerait que ce 3e album aborde un concept plus intimiste et conceptuel, apparemment très personnel. Quoiqu’il en soit, rien n’est très précis d’un point de vue de l’ambiance, fort logiquement vu le concept, même si les atmosphères ne sont pas absentes. Visuellement, l’ensemble noir et terne qui tend un peu sur le bleuté est fort agréable, en revanche, la qualité des dessins laisse à désirer : vraiment très naïfs. Le livret 12 pages reste très sobre et ne développe pas vraiment de travail infographique.

Un bon album, encore une fois, qui vient confirmer le talent du groupe pour offrir un produit à la fois inspiré et intelligent.

Fully aware of Hypnotic Dirge Records' reputation, the label amongst other cooperate closely with Solitude Productions, I said yes to review this without knowing what I was in for.

When it appeared that Frigoris didn't fit into the safe, good death/doom profile, but rather colours the world dark grey with sombre blue shades in the form of monotonous post-metal, I was about to resign.

Let me nonetheless present Nur ein Moment… für Sie, der liebt post-metall.

When the band calms the pace and presents beautiful, tearful melancholy, the band's rather graceful melodies shine through. As usually, the melodies are often presented via, or even behind, generic shoegaze riffs.

In conventional manners, the melodies are fair, but as so often within this genre, they differ not from the masses. The vocals are angry and black, but the overall mood is neither completed furious, hateful, black, depressed or devilish. Vocals without hope, over tunes with a hint of sunshine, just feels whiny and emo and I become dejected and impatient. Will these six songs never finish. With a duration of over 50 minutes, the album feels as if it'll last for half an eternity.

The violin in closing Station is however gorgeous as hell. I'll give the emotional Germans that.

This most certainly didn't become the objective review I originally had in mind, but hey, fuck it. We all have different tastes, and this album is really quite nice. I'm just tired of self-pitying monotonous moaning. If you have a taste for what I am weary of, fairly regular, whining and complaining post-monotony, it may very well be that you will embrace the quartet's third full-length album, Nur ein Moment…

Ergo, you're strongly advised to form your own opinion!

Nur Ein Moment is het eerste deel van een tweeluik door de atmosferische blackmetalband Frigoris omtrent suïcide. Deze Duitsers beschrijven op dit album een treinrit waarin de hoofdpersoon diverse fasen tegenkomt die voorafgaan aan het besluit de daad voort te zetten of er van af te zien. Dit is het derde album van deze Duitsers en voor deze schijf hebben ze gebruikgemaakt van Daniel Heyn, die het geheel heeft gemixt. Hij is bekend van zijn samenwerking met bijvoorbeeld Primordial, Secrets Of The Moon en The Ruins Of Beverast.

Dit album gaat van start met deprimerende en dramatische klanken en hier zal de komende 52 minuten niet meer van af worden geweken. Het album komt binnen met een gigantische bombast, waardoor het voor de luisteraar noodzaak is even geduld te hebben tot de sound went. Al gauw wordt er afgewisseld met cello's, vrouwenzang en prachtige post-rockpassages. Ondanks dat deze onderdelen zeer doeltreffend zijn, worden ze niet tot in den treure herhaald. Hierdoor blijven ze speciaal. De gitaarpartijen zijn non-stop in mineur en spelen de grootste rol in het geheel. Zanger/gitarist Dominik Winter maakt gebruik van typische blackmetalscreams afgewisseld met Ghost Bath-achtig geroep.

De ritmesectie is ontzettend goed verzorgd en benadert een live-gevoel. De basdrums zijn getriggerd, maar bevatten nog voldoende lage tonen waardoor het geheel als een machine doordendert. Het is wel een beetje jammer dat deze berg aan melancholie zelden wordt onderbroken door een aantal stevige en energieke metalpassages. Dit zal niet voor iedereen een probleem zijn, maar het is wel zo dat dit album hierdoor op de lange termijn een beetje saai wordt. Hiermee fungeert deze schijf meer als achtergrondmuziek en dat lijkt mij niet echt een compliment voor een metalband.

Deze langspeler is een aanrader voor de liefhebber van de depressieve blackmetalgolf die momenteel gaande is. Denk hierbij aan Coldworld, Ghost Bath en Der Weg Einer Freiheit. Voor nu is het (wat deze band aangaat) afwachten tot opvolger In Stille het levenslicht zal zien. Liefhebbers van korte en bondige metaltracks kunnen deze schijf beter links laten liggen.

Seeing things move against the current grain is always satisfying. In our worldwide culture of instant gratification and song-driven (as opposed to album-driven) appeal, we can count on metal bands to buck the tide. Germany’s blackened doomsters Frigoris give us their third album, Nur ein Moment (Just a Moment), and its only part one of a two-album concept (how’s that for making one wait…) – one that deals with the consequences of suicide in an interesting way.

The concept itself is fertile ground for a band with a sound such as Frigoris. They go the extra distance by setting up the concept as a story, complete with a prologue and putting the songs into chapters. The album ends appropriately with an interlude (but don’t expect it to go out with a wimper). Black metal and doom make up the bulk of Frigoris’ approach, with some dabbling into post-metal here and there for added effect. All in all, it’s quite effective at pulling the listener into it’s tale, finding just the right blend of (somewhat) abrasive blackened melodies with feelings of melancholy and isolation. It’s a bleak approach from the get-go, with a familiar sense of longing that Kauan provided on their last effort. A bitter blend of sorrow with moments that feel almost triumphant (“Himeros”). They also use violin to enhance the mood at times, with “Et in Arcadia Ego” introducing them early on and designing a strong finish to the opening track, serving up just the right amount of emotional heft. Some additional highlights can be found later in the album with the beautiful sorrowful “Persona” and previously mentioned closer “Station,” which builds from strings upwards to powerful and depressive riffing.

Nur ein Moment manages to pull on the heartstrings without being melodramatic or using cheap ploys. A somber album that reels the listener into a cold and bleak landscape that yields some resonating feelings once the album is complete. And as the first of a two-album concept, rightly gets the listener excited to see how they conclude it.

The dramatic sonic collision between black metal and prog is something to behold on Frigoris’ Nur ein Moment …, an album rife with emotion. And rightfully so, given that it is the first of a two-part concept album that delves into the thoughts of a pained soul on the verge of committing suicide.

For those not versed in the German language, the storyline is one built solely around the music, given the vocals are spewed in the band’s native tongue. But in this case, it works. From the tension of epic 11-minute “Et in Arcadia Ego” to the desperate pace of “Truwen,” Frigoris dive deep into the immanency of suicide and the painful process of making such a tragic decision. The power of these nine tracks is unrelenting, even at their most sensitive and fragile, and the language barrier is overcome by the seismic intensity of the music.

Nur ein Moment …, which means “just one moment” in English, is a progressive, post-black metal masterpiece. Albums like this elevate metal to new levels, breaking apart stereotypes with emotion, intelligence and mastery.

On August 25, Hypnotic Dirge will release the new album by the German band Frigoris, whose name you may recall from the praise we heaped on an advance track from the album named “Trúwen”. Entitled Nur ein Moment… (Just one Moment…), it follows the band’s 2013 debut full-length Wind and is the first part of a two-album concept that follows “the tracks of a protagonist who faces the consequences of suicide in an interior journey.” Today we present a full stream of the album in advance of its release later this week.

Through the course of the album’s six long tracks Frigoris move from passages of soft, ethereal beauty to storms of surging blackened power, interweaving elements of black metal, post-metal and doom to create a journey through a changing emotional landscape of peaks and valleys.

Slow, shimmering, wistful guitar arpeggios and soulful violin solos create feelings of isolation and introspection that are grief-stricken yet bewitching. In the mind’s eye, the music calls up cascades of misting rain, glistening under dark skies, a manifestation of loss and remembrance.

Juxtaposed against these moments of beleaguered yet beguiling melody, accented by whispers and somber clean vocals, are gales of blasting/thundering percussion and raking chords, with the music’s intensity underscored by caustic shrieks that straddle the line between inconsolable anguish and red-hot fury. When Frigoris shift gears into these racing storm-fronts of sound, it’s a blood-rushing experience — with trilling tremolo melodies that prove to be memorable as well as gripping in the moment.

The album fires the imagination. The songs can be understood in different ways — as visions of changing physical landscapes that include both the hopelessness and abandonment of urban decay and the bleak majesty of ancient, rain-sodden forests, or as an exploration of interior landscapes of longing, depressive agony, and a measure of defiant hope.

But these are just my impressions. This kind of well-conceived and beautifully crafted atmospheric black metal is likely to resonant in a myriad of ways depending on what each listener brings to the experience. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have.
