Tuntematonta kotimaista black metal -laitaa kulkeva Kval on jälleen yksi luontomystiikasta inspiraationsa ammentava sooloprojekti. Alkuasetelma ei ole paperilla kovinkaan mielenkiintoinen, mutta itse musiikki onnistuu ilahduttamaan toimivuudellaan.

Kval edustaa suomalaisbändeille hieman erikoisempaa tunnelmallista black metalia, jonka eteen joku saattaisi liittää jopa post-sanan. Tiedossa on siis viipyileviä riffikuljetuksia, kaihoisaa maalailua sekä paikoin hieman kimurantimpaa ja korkealentoisempaa menoa, jonka alkulähteiltä voi kuvitella löytävänsä suomalaisen IC REXin vaikutuksen.

Neljä keskimäärin noin kymmenminuuttista kappaletta sisältävä Laho ei vaikuta aivan loppuun asti viilatulta teokselta, missä piilee suuri osa levyn viehätystä – kappaleissa on todellakin omanlaistaan inhimillistä haavoittuvaisuutta, mikä jää puuttumaan monelta saman genren edustajalta.

Kvalin takaa löytyvä Miro Lamo ei ole suuri säveltäjänero, mutta miehen visio juuri tämän bändin musiikillisesta ilmeestä tuntuu asettuvan todella hyvin kohdilleen. Tulevalla kolmannella kokopitkällä saattaa kajahtaa jo todella kovaa.

Por enésima vez, desde la Tierra de los Mil Lagos nos llega una obra para analizar. De manos del sello canadiense Hypnotic Dirge Records, recibimos la segunda obra en larga duración del one man band finés KVAL. Proyecto formado en 2016 bajo el nombre de KHAOSSOS y rebautizado cuatro años después, no fue hasta 2017 cuando se editó el debut homónimo, que editó también Hypnotic Dirge.

He de confesar que este LP, titulado Laho, se me antojó mucho más atractivo cuando escuché uno de los cortes sueltos que cuando me adentré en la escucha completa del redondo. Me explico: me considero un gran seguidor del black metal en cualquiera de sus vertientes, siendo la escena finlandesa una de las que más me gusta. Pero sí que es cierto que en algunas ocasiones es muy complicado despuntar entre tantísima banda como las que nos ofrece incluso el black metal de corte atmosférico.

Me ha gustado el disco, no os voy a engañar, pero en algunos momentos se me ha hecho un poco cuesta arriba, un poco monótono. En algunos casos, a los one man band, al tratarse de proyectos unipersonales, puede que les falte un poco del ‘punch’ y la variedad que pueda ofrecer una mente extra aportando ideas. Me ha dado un poco esa sensación, ya que al tratarse de temas largos, con transiciones por lo general lentas, a veces son necesarios unos elementos que llenen los huecos que están dejando otros.

Quiero decir que si, por ejemplo, un riff de guitarra se repite prolongadamente, la batería realice fills o cambios de patrón para que ese riff no resulte repetitivo. Es el mayor inconveniente que le he visto a este álbum. Si vas a hacer canciones largas y con riffs que se estiran bastante, hay que procurar dar algo de versatilidad al asunto; al menos esa es mi opinión.

Por supuesto, el disco tiene cosas muy buenas, pues las lineas vocales se funden de maravilla con los elementos de atmósfera, llegando a resultar un black metal casi etéreo en muchas ocasiones. Hay muy buenas intenciones en lo que a las cuerdas se refiere, muy buenos momentos plasmados en grandes riffs y melancólicas melodías, como si fueran movidas por una suave corriente de aire entre las espesas ramas de los árboles de un oscuro bosque.

Sin duda, los elementos atmosféricos son los que llevan el gran peso del disco, pues sin ellos sólo nos quedaría un black metal gris y lento con algunas muy buenas ideas. Si te va el rollo de bandas como ELLENDE, ALDA, EARTH AND PILLARS o ENISUM pero más tranquilo y con aires fineses, dale una oportunidad a KVAL; quizá le saques más virtudes a su segunda obra que yo.

Finland why is always Finland they are truly one of the most inventive and creative places on this Earth for extreme and avant music . This is Atmospheric Post Black metal on the highest of all orders. I love the very ethereal side that the music creates with that Virus, Code, VBE, Katatonia vibe. Kval is all about the beauty and the nightares and its what the music and gritty vocal style creates for me . I hear so much experimental mayhem and even bands on labels like Prophecy, D.M.P , I,Voidhanger and Third I rex. The tones on Laho are twisted to put it simple and there are these oriental and eastern elements that come in and out that really at times give me that Sigh and Salem vibe. Kval you are even folky at times but not in neoclassical way more in that Pagan/ Midevial thing . Hell you all know what I mean. Love the fragile side that you get through at the album as well. Here is another band that much love Tenhi and Dorenreich as well. I think its really time for you to listen and just adore this album.

Una vez más, el verano estaba a punto de acabar. Los interminables días cargados de vida daban paso a la oscuridad y a la muerte. No tenía constancia de cuanto había vivido, pero si sabía que posiblemente aquel fuese su último invierno. Echó la vista atrás y recordó la suerte que tuvo al encontrar aquel árbol moribundo. Tenía un gran agujero en su corteza que le resultó perfecto para crear su mortal trampa. Nunca se sintió un asesino. Tan solo era pura supervivencia. Sin embargo, reconocería a cualquiera que le preguntase, que sentía una alegría indescriptible cada vez que veía como su comida intentaba desesperadamente escapar de la red…

Bienvenidos al universo de Kval.

El segundo disco de la One Man Band de Atmospheric Black Metal Kval, llamado «Laho», vio la luz de forma independiente el 22 de mayo de 2019. Un día más tarde, el sello Hypnotic Dirge Records, también lo lanzó.

El hombre que está detrás del proyecto se hace llamar igual que «su criatura», encargándose de todos los instrumentos y voces.

La propuesta musical del de Finlandia es ideal para días lluviosos, reflexivos y depresivos. Las tonadas, unen de forma magistral la rabia con la melancolía. Sin embargo, pecan de contener una estructura demasiado similar entre sí. Las tres primeras comienzan de forma pausada, para seguidamente ir metiendo los diferentes cambios de guitarras, incluyendo siempre sobre la mitad más o menos voces susurradas. El último corte, es una instrumental de carácter íntimo que pone el punto y final a un trabajo que sin ser ni mucho menos malo no llega a despuntar por completo. La producción no resulta excesivamente cruda. Por otro lado, chapó a la portada, que exhibe a la perfección el ambiente sombrío que emana la música que contiene el nombrado Elepé.

Casi que ya os he dejado de caer como son los riffs ¿verdad? Melancolía en estado puro. Hallaréis ataques de tremolo picking, dobles armonías, instantes pausados y toneladas de tristeza.

Con los registros vocales no hay mucha sorpresa. Los predominantes shrieks comparten espacio con pinceladas de clean vocals.

Sin despuntar lo más mínimo, las cuatro cuerdas se oyen, que ya es mucho más de lo que pueden decir la mayoría de los grupos.

La percusión va de forma exclusiva a medio gas. No queráis celeridad, porque aquí no hay de eso.

Destacaría ‘Laho’ por incluir el único «solo» de guitarra de todo el álbum.

Bueno, pues al menos en mi caso, ni me ha entusiasmado ni me ha disgustado el plástico. Echadle un oído y juzgad por vosotros mismos.

Kval è la creatura del giovane Miro Lamo, blackster finlandese di stanza da qualche parte nei dintorni di Helsinki. Laho, marcio in finlandese, è il secondo album con questo monicker, ma in realtà soltanto il primo a essere pensato specificamente per questo progetto: il debutto omonimo Kval (2017), infatti, non era altro che una ristampa con una veste ripensata di Kuolonkuu, disco che Lamo pubblicò nel 2015 come Khaossos, il precedente nome della band.

Dopo questa arzigogolata introduzione, rimane da specificare il fatto che nonostante l’origine finnica i riferimenti principali di Kval arrivano da oltre il golfo di Botnia, oltre la Svezia, dalla costa occidentale norvegese. Scordatevi la rabbia e la furia cieca di un certo tipo di black metal, soprattutto finlandese: Laho è un album che guarda alla scuola altra, del Burzum di Det Som Engang Var e Filosofem, ma anche e soprattutto dei grandi dimenticati Forgotten Woods. Quattro sole canzoni per quasi quaranta minuti di musica, tempi medi e rarissime accelerazioni, una chitarra sconsolata a perenne monito di quanto la vita faccia schifo. L’umore generale è proprio quello di The Curse Of Mankind, e la costruzione di Laho ricorda da molto vicino quella di Hvis Lyset Tar Oss, con l’ultimo brano strumentale e tastierine Chicco come fossero ancora gli anni ‘90 (d’accordo, in “Kaihon Kuiskaus” non ci sono solo le campionature midi di “Tomhet”, ma ci siamo capiti).

A livello tematico, l’album viene presentato come un concept sulla putrefazione del sottobosco (il marcio del titolo, appunto), ma letta in chiave allegorica e facente riferimento al decadimento che il genere umano sta attraversando in quest’epoca nefasta. Per essere sicuro di rendere l’idea, Lamo ha scelto titoli come luce che si scioglie, rito del nord e sussurro malinconico. Certo, la traccia bonus strumentale presente sulla versione CD, una ripresa della prima “Valosula”, poteva anche meritarsi un titolo migliore di “Bonus Track”, ma sono dettagli.

L’abilità dimostrata dal multistrumentista della terra dei mille laghi è notevole, tuttavia è il caso di segnalare come in questa occasione le chitarre in studio siano appannaggio di WNTRBRNR, la mentre dietro Auriel, altra band finlandese dedita al black più atmosferico. Lo stesso si è anche occupato di missaggio e mastering, mentre tutto il resto, dalla scrittura alle tastiere, al kantele, è opera di Lamo.

Nella sua semplicità e immediatezza Laho è una graditissima sorpresa per tutti gli amanti del black metal più contemplativo e d’antan, oltre che più intimamente pessimista e sconsolato. Tutto lascia intendere che i Forgotten Woods abbiano finalmente trovato il loro erede tanto a lungo mancato.

Po ostatnich średnich i powiedzmy sobie szczerze, słabych płytach z kręgów atmosferycznego black metalu, nie miałem ochoty już na przeprawy z tego typu kapelami. W ręce wpadła mi jednak druga płyta fińskiego Kval. I się skusiłem… Raz, że mam słabość do fińskiej sceny, a dwa, że lubię Finów :)

Kval to projekt, w którym władzę absolutną i niepodzielną sprawuje… Kval, który jest jedynym członkiem projektu, a podobnie jak na debiutanckim albumie, wydanym również dla Hypnotic Dirge Records, gościnnie jest wpierany przez osobnika ukrywającego się pod milutkim pseudonimem WNTRBRNR (wymówi ktoś?), który pomógł Kvalowi w partiach gitar i klawiszy. Dodam jeszcze, że Kval początkowo zwał się Khaossos i nawet wydał płytę pod tą nazwą w 2015 roku zatytułowaną „Kuolonkuu”. Po zmianie nazwy od 2016 roku projekt nagrywa pod nazwą Kval. I to tyle z historii, przejdźmy do teraźniejszości.

Przyznam się bez bicia, że kilka razy podchodziłem do tego albumu i chyba dwa razy wyłączałem w trakcie i mówiłem „pas”. Po prostu miałem dość tego typu muzy. W końcu za którymś jednak razem, jak to się mówi „zażarło”. Nie jest to płyta z muzą jaką sobie wymarzyłem, ale w porównaniu do ostatnich średniaczków recenzowanych przeze mnie, wybija się zdecydowanie ponad przeciętność. Do słuchania takiej muzy muszę mieć nastrój, nie siedzę w takich klimatach i być może stąd moja niepewność i brak zdecydowania.

Kval porusza się w klimatach atmosferycznego black metalu z „podjazdami” w stronę muzyki ambientowej. I w przeciwieństwie do ostatnich „wynalazków” muza ma w sobie to „coś”. Raz, że pomimo raczej wolnych partii, sporo się tutaj dzieje, a Kval ma pomysł na swoją twórczość i nie wałkuje w kółko tych samych motywów. Mamy pojawiające się (sporadycznie, ale jednak) jakieś damskie wokale, akustyczne gitary, czyste męskie wokale (również rzadko) czy też partie zagrane na kantele (fiński ludowy instrument muzyczny), całość zamyka utwór ambientowy zatytułowany „Kaihon kuiskaus”. Teksty w języku fińskim i jest to jak najbardziej trafiony pomysł. Ogólnie odnoszę wrażenie, że taka muza mogła wypłynąć tylko i wyłącznie z Finlandii i nie wyobrażam sobie na tej płycie tekstów po angielsku, czy też w innym języku. Po prostu ta płyta „pachnie” Finlandią i żeby nie było niedomówień, nie mam na myśli wódki ;)

Walorem tego albumu jest to, że muzyka wciąga. I mimo, że nie mamy tutaj ani odrobiny szybkich partii to całość ma w sobie jakiś urok, który każe bliżej zapoznawać się z zawartością „Laho”. Być może przemawia przeze mnie w jakimś stopniu wspomniana słabość do sceny fińskiej, ale uwierzcie mi, że „Laho” to znakomita odskocznia od blastów i napierdalanek, które towarzyszą człowiekowi każdego dnia. Albumowi trzeba dać szansę, najlepiej to zrobić późnym wieczorem, zapodać sobie drinka, zamknąć oczy i dać porwać się tym dźwiękom lub wsiąść w samochód późnym wieczorem i pojechać przed siebie.

Ani przez moment nie odczułem znużenia tą muzyką, wręcz przeciwnie, zaczęła mnie ona coraz bardziej pochłaniać. Kval ma niewątpliwy talent do tworzenia ciekawych dźwięków i wykorzystuje ten talent w sposób jak najbardziej odpowiedni.

Miłą niespodzianką jest ukryty utwór, którym jest instrumentalna i jakby nieco surowsza wersja „Valosula”.

Polecam ten album wszystkim, którzy raz na jakiś czas chcą odpocząć obcując sam na sam z muzyką. Ja przy dźwiękach „Laho” odpływam gdzieś myślami i naprawdę dobrze mi z tym.

So it’s back to life, emptiness and chaos from the solo artist Kval from Finland who professes to a liking for Burzum. This is a follow up to his impressively bleak self-titled release of 2017.

“Laho” comprises five weighty pieces. From the outset we are transported to a cold world of despair and greyness. The delicate acoustic tones and ringing backdrop provide momentary pause for reflection, but make no mistake: this is a harsh, menacing affair. “Valosula” pumps up to an occasionally frenzied and always despairing and controlled black atmosphere. The figurative vultures are fluttering just as they would do on any later Burzum work. This is a world without mercy or passion, yet there is colour from the heaving soundscape, just that the colours are dark shades of black and grey. No less grey is the title track which follows, however this one is an ambient, melancholic piece which charges up into an epic wilderness. Despair and anguish ooze from the harsh vocals. A quiet passage ensues. The softer vocals smack of post-battle reflection. Always there is an air of natural freedom. In fact having got used to the grey and bleak world of Kval, now there is the beauty of a tranquil scene. The track “Laho” (translating as “Rot”) is a masterpiece of structure as the atmosphere rises again into epic heights to juxtapose the calm and delicate instrumentals. “Laho” is transfixing. “Pohjanriitti” drags us some more through the mire. The bleak and cold atmosphere remains constant, which makes for endurance rather than excitement, or the intrigue and beauty that characterised “Laho”. “Kaihon Kuiskaus” starts in a sombre, symphonic tone. And so it continues. Where I detected elements of life in the previous three pieces, here is six minutes of lifelessness. Chilling.

I read that “Laho” is meant to be a metaphor for the human mind. I heard melancholy and despair aplenty here, but I have to say that apart from that I didn’t feel this work from a human point of view. The coldness is distinctly inhuman. In my mind this was about grey scenes, inhospitable wastelands and maybe unforgiving forests, changing seasons and ultimately death. I guess everyone will respond in a different way, but the artist Kval has done what good artists do, and provoked reaction through these darkly atmospheric soundscapes.

Kval is chill, relaxation, atmospheric, one-person black metal from Finland. The vocals are extreme, but they are not super harsh and end up sounding almost as background landscape. Keyboards are important and for fans of this genre, this is something along the lines of the aural themes of forests-and-mountains vibes. It is chill rock with a bit of tremolo picking and some gentle-giant, softer growled vocals. Some of this music is just keyboard sounds for meditation or for helping people fall asleep, for chilling out, for a personal comfort zone, for yoga, for meditation, for doing homework, for working on a school project, so on and so forth.

The music might not perhaps sound all that impressive to the outsider’s ear, but in this genre what matters is not how wealthy the production is or the technicality of the musicianship. Feeling is perhaps more important than anything. For this reason, this recording should hold the attention of the devoted fan of this general style. At times the vocals might recall desperation or something different, like a vibe of tranquility, while the music itself often works melodies and if not direct melodies, then a general ambiance of melancholy or a greyness of a state of mind. The quality of the recording is not professional level, and if that bothers some listeners, they probably won’t change their minds with this DIY recording. While it might be accurate that this album will not necessarily convert masses who are not already on the inside track, the music is pretty catchy and competent in this field. The person behind this project at this point has years and years of experience in making this type of music, so it’s going to be worth your while if you are already a big fan of the genre.

While early Spring may bring the thaw its mid and late Spring that anchors the bloom and coloring of the waking world. Finnish artist Kval and his second album Laho is a fitting musical accompaniment to that greening, a contemplative and unhurried experience. Atmospheric black metal as likely only would emerge from Finland.

To reiterate: Laho goes many places and takes its time (each time) to get there. Melody and sustained atmosphere are key pillars of the experience; all things wrathful and unpleasant (blastbeats or otherwise) do not make an appearance. The occasional movement rides across waves of double bass but even then the general pace across the four songs can best be described as measured. The progressions take time, with three of four of the pieces on hand pushing near or beyond the ten minute mark- patience is mandatory to appreciate the conjured views.

And that view is often stellar. Piano, woodwinds, and all manner of employed strings (whether real or simulated) open up “Laho” before it finds traditional grooves, grooves that just as readily give way to resplendent digressions. There is in no small part a spiritual kinship at play here with the work of Saor, though with the accelerator turned way down. “Valosula” and “Pojanriitti” make use of these same components and employ them in similar ways. Closer “Kaihon Kuiskaus” is far more sparse in comparison, a keys and synth flavored bringer of night, the dark that concludes the story.

The sound of growth, of a forest alive (or what I remember of it from my perch here in the DC area), of the natural world in transition. Laho is a fine indulgence.

KVAL - translating to "anguish" in English - is an atmospheric ambient Black Metal band from Vantaa, Finland. Founded in 2012 under the name KHAOSSOS, the project began by recording a demo, EP and a split albums with 1389 and AURIAL as well as a debut album entitled “Kuolonkuu (Deathmoon).” Cold and dark mid-paced melodic Black Metal with catchy icy riffs coated in frost permeated the output of KHAOSSOS, conveying emptiness and the solitary nature of life. In 2016, the project was renamed KVAL, and the debut album was completely re-recorded under the new moniker. Slight changes were made to the songs as well as improvements to the mix, creating a much richer and more atmospheric sound. In the summer of 2017, the eponymous album was released by Hypnotic Dirge Records in a six panel digipack. Throughout late 2017 and 2018, KVAL began work writing and refining the tracks for their follow-up release, entitled “Laho,” the first album to be conceived entirely for KVAL from the start.

Compared to the previous album, “Laho” ("Rotten" in English) has a brighter and more colorful atmosphere musically while the lyrical themes on “Laho” references the decay and rot of the forest floor, applied as a metaphor for the human mind. Our inability to live in the moment, the loss of innocence, and the ever-present corrosion of our optimism and descent into cynicism encompass the themes of “Laho,” wrapped in captivating and entrancing Atmospheric Black Metal. “Valosula” opens the album, with soft and doleful clean guitar notes. The vocals come in with a distorted riff, menacing and anguished. The droning main riff continues throughout, as alternating passages of harshness and more melancholy ones play off each other, with the addition of piano notes here and there. The closing minute takes advantage of that wonderful atmosphere. “Laho” is another that opens with depressive clean guitars, and what sounds like notes from a flute of some sort. The main riff hits at about the three minute mark, coming in at first a little gently. The vocals however are raging fits of a madman gone insane. It softens a while with an ambient passage with clean spoken words that are solemn in their delivery. The gentle sway continues through the end of the track.

“Pohjantitti” opens with clean guitar passages that lead to a lumbering main riff, rich and full of sound. It holds you there with a hypnotic passage where the guitars lay on the same riff over and over, with anguished vocal screams over top. “Kaihon Kuiskaus” features some pretty but solemn piano notes and simulated cello, I believe. It’s the shortest track on the album, at just over six minutes in length. It’s all about the atmosphere here. The fifth track is listed as a “Bonus Track.” It has a mesmerizing drone to it, like some Desert or Stoner Rock. With no vocals, it allows you to take in the music more fully. Alternating passages of clean and distorted guitars keep you on your toes, and the distorted passages are quite harrowing. I think the bonus track allowed me to understand more of the concept of the album.

Overall, I found that this album embodies what I love about the diversity of the Black Metal genre. Gone are the days when all you had to do was scream over a wall of sound and call it Black Metal. KVAL has expanded this sound with various approaches that bring an element of diversity to the table that you don’t often here in the genre. The Stoner elements are probably not intended but add another layer to the sound as well. Definitely pick this one up!
