Review from Friedhof Magazine

From: Friedhof Magazine

Published: September 4, 2020

Original Link

Rating: 7.25/10

Reviewed by: Arcadio R.

Review from Aristocrazia Webzine

From: Aristocrazia Webzine

Published: August 27, 2020

Original Link

Reviewed by: V Rain

Review from Ave Noctum

From: Ave Noctum

Published: February 27, 2020

Original Link

Symphonic Black Metal band Nachtterror…no, hang on, merely using the term “Symphonic Black Metal” does not do Nachtterror justice. OK, as labels go, it’s not a million miles away and yes there are plenty of Symphonic Black Metal elements to their sound, but they’re not firmly positioned between Emperor or Dimmu Borgir here (though Nachtterror have their moments), as there is so much more going on in this bands multi-faceted approach. Of course, I’m stating this as someone who heard the band before he knew anything about them, just a link to a track and an offer to review them. I jumped at it and still reckon I lucked out on this one!

Yes, Nachtterror are a Black Metal band, granted, but on this their first full-length release it feels like when given the room to explore and push musical boundaries this band have totally embraced it. To make any particular comparisons is difficult as the progressive nature of the tracks and the variations therein mean that just one section of a song could remind me of In The Woods, then Age of Silence and maybe Kampfar, with sections of aggressive Symphonic Black Metal scattered between. Additionally, a track could explode into frenzied blast beats, then emerge out of something Arcturus might present, to dive headlong into a passage similar to Ved Buens Ende with maybe a dose of Oceans Of Sadness. If pushed to simplify, maybe this is Symphonic Black Metal with a Pagan/Black Metal approach of early to mid era Borknagar with some Avant-garde Winds-esque moments running through many of the other layers that each track holds…some of the time…

The vocals are shared between low-to-mid range melancholic clean, to gut-wrenching grunts and screaming harsh…plus much in between, depending on what the music demands. And that music is as varied and intricate as you could hope for (the 11 minute title track alone is proof of that!). The way this talented Canadian 6 piece work their way around a song is at times breath-taking, such is their unwillingness to comply to the norm. “Judgement” is an unpredictable and strikingly interesting album that refuses to be put in any particular box. This is not an album to be grasped in a couple of listens, and should appeal to avant-garde minded Black Metal fans everywhere as well as any fan of diverse Extreme Metal. This is an album that asks for time to grow and demands repeat attention, with a wealth of imaginative arrangements that delve into the band’s extensive repertoire – this is indeed an impressive album.

Rating: 8/10

Reviewed by: Andy Barker

Review from V-M Underground

From: V-M Underground

Published: February 1, 2020

Original Link

From Saskatchewan in Canada Nachtterror send us some melodic blackened Death/Doom metal in form of their first full length album “Judgement”. And what an album it is! This is one of those rarities that combines music and visual art as it is presenting a separate piece of painted artwork for each track. The fact that Lord Maelkleth, one of the band members, is the visual artist behind the paintings makes it more rare and special.

Called “experimental metal” by some and self labelled as blackened Doom Metal, I think this album is very hard to put in one specific genre label in terms of variety. But what I can say is that Judgement is an ecstatic eargasm! The combination of doomy sometimes dreamy parts with aggressive fast ones is incredible and every song has some surprises. The mixture of growls and screams with the clean vocal parts are perfectly balanced and there is not a single boring second in this masterpiece.

But enough said, I just recommend you to click on Bandcamp, Youtube etc. and listen to this perfect piece of art. Everything about this album rocks. Listening to “Judgement” reminds me why I fell in love with metal music decades ago. Finally I have only one thing to say: Thank you, Nachtterror!

Reviewed by: HaCeBo

Review from ZWaremetalen

From: ZWareMetalen

Published: January 9, 2020

Original Link

Volgt u even mee?

“King of the other side, ruler of none. God is reborn, judgement shall come.”

Snel over naar het volgende nummer: A Forest at Night.

The Beauty of the Withering Flower.

To Beckon the Weak zat bijvoorbeeld wél goed in elkaar).

Rating: 70/100

Reviewed by: Tafkads

It’s because of that last one, Maeskyyrn, that I came across Judgement, the full-length debut from the disappointingly-not-German Nachtterror. Earlier this year, I channeled all the might that my status as an exalted AMG writer imbues me with and demanded the promo Maeskyyrn’s Interlude from Hypnotic Dirge (read: I sent a politely-worded email). They obliged and sent not only Maeskyyrn but also Nachtterror. Reviewing schedules being what they are, we couldn’t get to symphonic black metal six-piece Nachtterror‘s record in time for its release. And that is a damn shame because Judgement is a seriously good and incredibly varied slab of metal.

Judgement follows two EPs (2008 and 2012) and a 2015 split with Altars of Grief, Of Ash and Dying Light… Many of the tracks that now comprise Judgement are souped up versions of cuts from one of those earlier releases. Given its gestation period, perhaps it’s unsurprising that there is a helluva lot going on. Where to start? Perhaps with the cover art, designed by guitarist Eric Escott (aka Lord Maelkleth),1. Like the record itself, the centerpiece draws the eye or, as the case may be ear, and it’s only on closer inspection that you start to see all the other things going on around the fringes.

Nachtterror’s core sound is symphonic black metal, with keyboards and synths running riot over furious blast beats and rapid riffing. That feels like I’m selling these Saskatchewan natives short though, as across Judgement’s hour-long runtime they never repeat a trick. From Nevermore-worthy power ballads (“The Beauty of a Withering Flower”), through Windir-esque folk-tinged black metal (“A Forest at Night”) to doomy, symphonic numbers falling somewhere between early Paradise Lost and the most recent Borknagar (“Sea of Dread” and “To Beckon the Weak”), the variety is huge and yet … and yet it all hangs together as one.

Unexpectedly delicate piano pieces bring death-tinged black metal to a juddering halt (“Beneath the Crimson Moon”). Sometimes the ferocity is resurrected with equal suddenness by drummer Forgir smashing back into gear; sometimes it is a gradual, almost post-metal building of layers. Across it all, the triple mic attack—from the two guitarists, the aforementioned Eric ‘Maelkleth’ Escott and Erik “Infernal Saint Wikk” Labossiere, and lead vocalist Lord Vatiel (Erick?)—growls, rasps, barks, howls and croons. Smashing these styles together, often simultaneously, gives Nachtterror a deranged sound that I really enjoy (“Beneath the Crimson Moon”). The sound of unhinged howls dis-harmonizing with doomy cleans and death metal growls, over synths and rapid triplets on the drums (“Sea of Dread”) or delicate dual cleans over the gradual build of guitar before breaking into Mikael Åkerfeldt-worthy growls (“Upon Ashen Shores”) is stunningly effective.

In case you can’t tell, I’ve really fallen in love with Judgement. Over the past couple of months, I have returned again and again, with every listen revealing something new. It also sounds great, with my only slight criticism being that the drums are perhaps slightly too high in the mix but when the work behind the kit is this good, who cares? Nachtterror took their sweet time getting this record out—they got together in 2006 ffs! So, I just hope we don’t have to wait another 13 years for the follow up.

Tracks to Pass Judgement on: “Sea of Dread,” “Beneath the Crimson Moon” and “Upon Ashen Shores”

Reviewed by: Carcharodon

Review from Metal Temple

From: Metal Temple

Published: November 11, 2019

Original Link

From the capitol of Saskatchewan, Regina, Canada, NACHTTERROR hails with some melodic sounding death metal. Following two EP’s and a Split release, "Judgement" is their first full length album released October 10, 2019. And what an album it is! Called “experimental metal” by some and self labelled as blackened doom metal. I think this album is hard to slap one specific genre label onto it as there is several different styles combined in this eargasm. It is worth mentioning that the album art for "Judgement" is off the hook. Each song has a corresponding painting done by Lord Maelkleth, as well as each song is poetically written.

"Sea of Dread" “As the night begins, As the storm rages within, He suffers from inside, For he had seen it all, And he will surely fall” With a soft start, slow guitar melody, we roll right into this fantastical track. Sung with a mix of soft and harder lyrics, it starts out with slower vocals. But it very carries its magical theme so well. This is a song about love betrayed and the pain associated with it. About halfway into the song the vocals get much harder, with a sound that reminds me a little of old school Dani Filth vocals. "To Beckon the Weak" – Keyboards by Horhd lead the way into this song. Rhetorical lyrics, stoically sung. This song is metal at its most lovely. While it has such poignant connotations, it still boasts some classical metal sounds throughout.

"Beneath the Crimson Moon" – Complete with all the different styles each band member brings in this lineup, again the lyrics stand out. They remind me of a poem I would read in my favorite old poem book. Gothically dark, yet set to the glorious sound of metal. “I still recall the moment we met, When the night was silent and cold, Glorious darkness bore the sweet, pale, That in my arms I would hold”. "The Beauty of the Witherinng Flower" is the best track on the album in my opinion, hands down! “When I close my eyes, And I can see you there my bride, As we walk the autumn days, And the nightfall the stars above we’d gaze”. These lyrics make my heart ache. Definitely an emotional trip, and then you add its soft guitar riffs to those amazing voices, this song is epic.

In conclusion, run, do not walk… run over to youtube or bandcamp and listen! I just fell in love with metal all over again thanks to these guys. Take my heart, take it! I will forever-more be a fan of NACHTTERROR. “Nachtterror” a made-up term whose intent was to find a foreign way to say ‘night terror’ and is the fear of what comes in the night. Thank you to the band for the amazing pieces of art, musical, lyrical, and painted. Everything about this album rocks. Pretty sure I’m going to use its album art as a background on my phone and brag that I got the digital download from the band itself, yes, I liked THAT much! Carry on with the awesomeness. Thank you NACHTTERROR, truly.

Rating: 10/10

Reviewed by: Laura Glover

Review from Subterraneo Webzine

Reviewed by: Daniel Vazquez Lobato

Review from Dioses del Metal

From: Dioses del Metal

Published: October 28, 2019

Original Link

Reviewed by: ElyAngelOfDeath

Review from Infernal Masquerade Magazine

From: Infernal Masquerade Magazine

Published: October 14, 2019

Original Link

Unleashing one of the most unique and unexpectedly awesome releases of 2019, today we have Canada’s Nachtterror with their debut release “Judgement”. Clocking in at over 60 minutes of music, this release has a bit of everything for everybody, from heavy riffs and fast-paced sections to more atmospheric and melancholic passages. As the band’s first full length release, it shows a unique trajectory path between different styles and influences through the tracks presented in this release.

Setting a very dreamy and mellow vibe when starting with “Behold the Terror”, we have a certain Pyogenesis/Decoryah vibe. This track slowly builds up to blistering drumming and harsh vocals, marking a very interesting and yet drastic transition. Settling into an older retro Gothic Metal-ish style with “Sea of Dread”, the band again exploits their multi-vocalist approach and delivers a very harmonious track with excellent distorted guitars and tempo changes.

The madness continues with the highly chaotic “To Beckon the Weak”, a track filled with punishing guitars, harsh vocals, showcasing the band’s heavier and more Black Metal side. However, as all tracks, this song still manages to create brilliant contrasts with lush clean vocals and very epic slowe sections. Our favorite track is the tour de force “Beneath the Crimson Moon”, a song in which the band showcases all their unique styles intricately mixed together in one monumental track.

For those looking for symphonic Black Metal-styled tracks, “A Forest At Night” has a playful and chilling edge to it. As we prefer the dreamier and more complex side of the band, “The Beauty of the Withering Flower” is another stand out track, reminding us of a more dynamic version of the band Thorns of the Carrion. The band’s ability to deliver complex and yet engaging tracks with tons of different layers and little intricate details to discover is very impressive as the album title track demonstrates.

Closing with the doomier “Upon Ashen Shores”, the band has managed to produce one of the most unique and multi-faceted albums of 2019. For over an hour, Nachtterror showcases their ability to craft intricate songs with tons of different elements cohesively put together. It is hard to pin down the band’s style, but we have to say that are elements from everybody from Dimmu Borgir to Decoryah. If you like powerful releases that push the boundaries of known genres and deliver an amalgamation of styles, we sure to not miss out on “Judgement”.

Rating: 94/100

Reviewed by: Dark Emperor
