This month I had the great pleasure of reviewing two doom / death metal bands. The first one was the Greek IMMENSITY and now the Russian NEGATIVE VOICE, both released by Hypnotic Dirge Records. In their second album entitled "Cold Redrafted", they bring a refined and very elaborate sound. Led by Andrey "Obscurus" Samsonov (guitar), the band was founded in 2000 and remained active until 2004, having three demos released. After that period, there was a pause until the band returned in 2010, to release its first full length album "Infinite Dissonance" in 2013, already featuring current members Eugeniy Loginov (guitar / vocal), Alex Nikolskiy (bass) and Konstantin Pavlov (drums).

The first of the eight songs in "Cold Redrafted", already shows what these guys came for. After an instrumental introduction of practically one minute and a half, "Limitation" begins with a clean vocal, and in a short space of time they add an almost black metal voice. Many parts of this song refer to the death metal of the 1990s. "City of Decaying Gaze" follows it with a beautiful melody, highlighting the work of the two guitarists, mainly lead guitars.

"Nightmare Everlasting" begins in a slow and deep tone and evolves until it gets fast and aggressive. In a very interesting passage in the middle of the track they detach the instruments separately demonstrating all the techniques and skills of the musicians as high point of the production. "Karmic Pattern" focuses mainly on guttural vocals and more depressive riffs. My two favorite songs from the album are "Instant" and "Light House", both bringing a melodic and melancholic atmosphere, with several changes of tempo and where the soft vocals are more prominent, along with the beautiful effects and distortions of the guitars. “Impasse” brings a very modern Doom Metal style and harmonic with very attractive rhythm. To finish the work we have "Draft Light", in a farewell tone of this excellent album.

"Cold Redrafted" shows an evolution in respect to its predecessor "Infinite Dissonance", counting on the inclusion of new elements and a more elaborate musicality. Although we can perceive diverse influences from bands like OPETH, CREMATORY and KATATONIA, the band has its own personality and style .The experience of listening to the album could be improved if they had had a little more carry in production. From my point of view, they failed letting the sound of the other instruments distance themselves from the guitars sometimes. Another point, is that the clean vocal is sometimes, too lazy and low in some sections.

Possedevo soltanto un ricordo parziale dei Negative Voice, uno dei tanti nomi che distrattamente mi erano passati in testa per un periodo e del quale oggi invece mi trovo a scrivere. A distanza di tre anni dalla pubblicazione del primo lavoro "Infinite Dissonance", che mi sono premurato di ascoltare e riascoltare, la formazione si rifà viva con un secondo disco intitolato "Cold Redrafted" decisamente bello.

Il quartetto russo appartiene al panorama doom metal, e se di partenza era legato alle sonorità death-doom di stampo melodico classiche, oggi sembra avere intrapreso una direzione leggermente differente. Partendo infatti da quell'impostazione, ha allargato il proprio raggio d'azione, convogliando in sé varianti che affondano in campo progressivo, post-metal e tavolta tinte fosche al limite col black. Episodi come "Nightmare Everlasting", "Instant", "Karmic Pattern" e "Draft Life" mettono in evidenza sia le qualità compositive ed esecutive del gruppo, sia l'attento compito svolto nell'approfondire, diversificare e aumentare il tasso tecnico, evitando comunque di divenire inutilmente prolissio. La proposta è piacevole e proprio per le molteplici sfaccettature maturate potrebbe venire ben accolta da un amante degli Opeth quanto da uno dei Katatonia, degli Agalloch o dei Daylight Dies.

Talento e voglia di fare non mancano di certo ai Negative Void e "Cold Redrafted" ne è la cristallina dimostrazione. Se ricercaste un album nel quale contaminazione e atmosfera siano componenti in grado di stimolare l'ascolto, dovreste pertanto dare loro una chance.

Eight songs fill this album, which has been released by Hypnotic Dirge Records and BadMoodMan Music. Negative Voice are from Moscow and somehow they incorporate Doom, Progressive Metal, Post-Metal, Death Metal, and Black Metal within this medley. From the very first song, ‘Limitation’, it's a musical dive into melodies, changing tempos and great creativity.

The band have not really labelled themselves to any genre or style and have left room so that they can be adventurous and it really shows in each song. The vocals sway from clean to guttural with the added blackened screams to accompany them from the very start. It's a welcome change to listen to a band where you really do not know what direction they are going in, and each song is full of surprises.

Evgeny Loginov and Andrew Samsonov provide some superb guitar melodies, whether it's rhythm or lead. They really push the boundaries and grace us with beautiful acoustic passages especially in ‘City of Decaying Gaze’.

‘Nightmare Everlasting’ starts majestically and builds to a faster pace. The bass cuts through and it's really worth it when you have musicians this good to explore each instrument when going back over the songs. It's open and filled with space for you to have an adventurous mindset.

‘Instant’ is one of my favourite tracks. It has some amazing breaks and the quiet part in the middle is melodic and builds beautifully. Production-wise it's a winner for me. Guitars are superbly recorded with the right amount of tone and distortion. The drums are fantastic and bring out the quality on display even more. 'Impasse' is yet another great display, and very reminiscent of Daylight Dies. The opening riff of ‘Lighthouse’ reminds of something that Rage Against the Machine could do, before the next section floats into an almost Opeth style with clean vocals.

This has been a great listen for me. Another band to really look forward to in the future. 'Cold Redrafted' will grab fans' attention because it spans so many genres and styles.

Los amantes del black/doom/death metal están de enhorabuena con este último trabajo de NEGATIVE VOICE “Cold, Redrafted”. Esta banda procedente de Rusia, más concretamente de su capital Moscú, tras su debut “Infinite Dissonance”, mucho más agresivo, experimenta nuevos caminos en este trabajo editado a través de Hypnotic Dirge Records, donde introducen nuevos elementos como voces limpias, toques progresivos…, superando con creces su debut y encuadrándose en su estilo.

Ocho nuevos cortes es lo que nos presenta el cuarteto formado por Loginov Evgeniy (guitarra y voces), Samsonov Andrey (guitarra y samples), Nikolskiy Alex (bajo) y Pavlov Konstantin (batería), y de las que vamos a hablar a continuación.

“Limitation”, a pesar de ser el tema que abre el disco es una de las que más me gustan, con su toque progresivo inicial, pero influenciado por un toque mágico y oscuro que envuelve a sus composiciones. Con un bajo muy presente en las estructuras, (detalle que me gusta) las voces aparecen etéreas y muy dulces, empezando con susurros para desarrollar lentamente sus melodías limpias y volverse más agresivas a medida que el tema va desarrollándose. Cada instrumento va en progresión en este corte, que en cierta manera me recuerda a los primeros ANATHEMA.

“City Of Decaying Gaze”, se inicia lenta y pausadamente, con guitarras y voces limpias, creando una atmosfera densa y oscura pero cargada de melodías, aun cuando se endurece con un doble bombo apisonador y toques más death/black en las voces, siguen su constante experimental en lo musical, con un solo de bajo y percusión a mediados del tema a lo que se les incorpora los demás elementos. Un tema que termina como empieza, con una dulce melodía lunar.

“Nightmare Everlasting”, comienza con toques muy progresivos de nuevo, sobretodo esta vez centrados en la percusión, y unas armonías muy oníricas en las guitarras, para introducir elementos de post/black, en unas de las estrofas más agresivas del álbum. Un tema contundente, contundente pero repleto de melodías establecidas por los constantes cambios de guitarras y por los samples que introducen, otro tema muy a destacar, poner atención en el cambio a mediados del tema, donde bebe de las influencias de OPETH.

“Instant”, continua la estela anterior, con una parte central instrumental, cargada de atmosferas. Esto es uno de los puntos fuertes de NEGATIVE VOICE, que deberían usar un poco más las voces limpias. Pero van definiendo su camino poco a poco y este segundo álbum así lo corrobora, bebiendo de OPETH, los primeros KATATONIA o ANATHEMA. “Impasse”, nos muestra ese lado doom/gothic, con sus riffs de guitarra pesados y donde las voces limpias encajan a la perfección, alternándola con las guturales rasgadas en un tema muy épico y repleto de un halo mágico muy conseguido. Este tema es otro de los más destacado, resaltando su parte central, que os recomiendo que la escuchéis.

“Karmic Pattern”, es el tema más largo del LP, superando los siete minutos, con una primera parte instrumental que va desarrollándose en un tema doom y oscuro,con voces guturales, que en ciertas partes las dobla con las limpias, para transportarnos a esa parte que NEGATIVE VOICE, compone en todos sus temas. Lo que me gusta de estas partes instrumentales, es que cada instrumento tiene su momento de presencia, no centrándose en solos de guitarras (el de este tema es uno de los más destacados del disco) como acostumbran la mayoría, sino que cada uno de los componentes tiene su momento de gloria. Los primeros compases de “Lighthouse”, tienen unos riffs de guitarras distintos, más rockeros y con otro sonido, pero rápidamente se desvanecen en una nebulosa onírica guiada por las melodías vocales hacia un abismo oscuro y carismático, todo ello perfectamente acompañado por las estructuras instrumentales, que nos guian hacia el último tema “Draft Life”, que pone el punto y final a este segundo álbum de NEGATIVE VOICE, como ellos saben hacer.

NEGATIVE VOICE, han realizado un segundo trabajo que supera con creces a su debut. Su propio sonido va evolucionando por muy buen camino y será un grupo a tener en cuenta dentro de la escena underground y sobre todo para los amantes del doom/metal/gothic, con toques de OPETH y los primeros KATATONIA y ANATHEMA. Temas como “Limitation”, “Nightmare Everlasting” o “Impasse” recogen todos los elementos que definen su música en un álbum muy compacto estilísticamente.

Está visto que lo que está de moda hoy en día es el Post Black Metal o bien el Black Metal con un suave tinte de Doom. ¡Ojo! No es una queja solo un apunte. Lo comento ya que últimamente estoy notando la misma tendencia de lanzar grupos y más grupos de Post Black Metal, Post-cualquiergenero o Doom/Cualquiergenero a la estratosfera de la misma forma que pasó con el Core y todos sus subgéneros durante los años 2007 y posteriores.

En esta ocasión hablaremos de una banda que procede de Moscú y que hace llamarse Negative Voice. Los rusos han presentado su segundo larga duración, Cold Redrafted, bajo el sello Hypnotic Dirge Records y la verdad es que para pasar una tarde en la que no quieres pensar en nada más que en tus más lejanos pensamientos (algunos más que pensamientos serían remordimientos) no está nada mal.

Sé que durante mi breve introducción he hablado de Post Black Metal y quizá este grupo posee más Doom que Post. Uno de los aspectos que más y mejor trabajados he podido percibir en Cold Redrafted es el funambulismo que han conseguido crear entre el Doom y un pequeño sucedáneo del Black Metal. En ningún caso es algo que pueda transpuar un quiero y no puedo, todo lo contrario, podría decirse que es incluso placentero no obstante si lo que buscamos es una descarga de adrenalina este no es tu grupo.

El compacto consta de ocho cortes con una duración media de cinco minutos. Duración más que aceptable para el género en el que Cold Redrafted habita. Además, en éste grupo podremos encontrar pasajes con punteos bastante enganchosos como el que se sucede en el cuarto tema “Instant” y que automáticamente funden un pasaje melódico con un low Black Metal que no hace más que generar un perfecto escenario, la maqueta perfecta, para ir de viaje tal y como os he comentado con anterioridad.

Si tuviera que recalcar algún punto negativo del disco tendría que hacerlo a nivel personal ya que en cuanto al valor técnico de la edición (producción, edición, escucha en un equipo hi-fi…) podría negativizar mas bien nada, así pues, decir que a nivel personal las voces limpias -las principales- me suenan un tanto asonantes para la melodía que ejecutan las guitarras.

La sinergia tra Hypnotic Dirge Records e Solitude Productions inizia a sortire ottimi risultati. Ne è l'esempio lampante il nuovo album dei russi Negative Voice, il secondo per il quartetto moscovita, intitolato 'Cold Redrafted' e vera sorpresa per il sottoscritto, che aveva sottovalutato i nostri nel 2013, quando uscì 'Infinite Dissonance'. Ascoltato il nuovo lavoro, mi sono dovuto ricredere invece sulle potenzialità, all'epoca forse totalmente inespresse, dei nostri. Signore e signori, 'Cold Redrafted' è quello che giudico un gran bell'album, maturo, fresco, squisitamente melodico, ma carico di energia, in grado di regalare emozioni in quantità e di qualità. Otto i brani contenuti e quasi tutti sorprendenti, sin da "Limitation", che mi ha conquistato sin dal primo assolo che si delinea nel primo minuto e mezzo del brano, al suo intero evolversi. Splendido, tutto qui, non serve aggiungere altro. Poi solo una cascata emotiva che mi trascina in un vortice di sensazioni che spaziano dalla malinconia alla gioia, quella vera, capace di regalare lacrime copiose agli occhi. I quattro ragazzi, migrati ora nella capitale russa, regalano un death doom atmosferico in grado di scomodare gli Agalloch, gli Opeth ma anche i Novembre e i Katatonia, per un condensato notevolissimo di musica di ottima fattura che farà la gioia di coloro che amano la drammaticità del doom, ma anche di quelli che non disprezzano le cavalcate post black ("Nightmare Everlasting"), le sinistre atmosfere ("The City of Decaying Gaze"), o i tecnicismi del progressive ("Lighthouse"), per un pot pourrì di assoluto valore che non deve passare inosservato, per alcun motivo. Questa è la musica che amo, in grado di trasmettermi cosi forti emozioni, che mi guidano nella scrittura di queste mie parole, addirittura ad occhi chiusi, godendo della delicata raffinatezza di questi ragazzi, saggi nel saper quando colpire con irruenza, ancor di più nel selezionare i momenti per un break acustico, l'utilizzo di clean vocals piuttosto che del growling assai convincente di Evgeniy Loginov. Classe cristallina, che viene messa al servizio anche solo nell'aprire un brano come "Instant", una song più nervosa e meno lineare rispetto a quelle apprezzate sin qui, in quell'incredibile trittico di pezzi che apre il disco. "Instant" è sicuramente più criptica, cupa, nostalgica e ricercata, forse anche per questo la più complicata da assimilare, ma comunque splendida. Torno a citare invece i Katatonia (del periodo intermedio) per quel riguarda le linee di chitarra quando a scorrere nel mio stereo è "Impasse", un'altra piccola gemma da non perdere. Con "Karmic Pattern" si torna a sprofondare nel doom abissale, anche se nella sua seconda metà, gli echi degli Opeth tornano a farsi sentire. Per certi versi questa uscita dei Negative Voice potrebbe essere accostabile al nuovo lavoro dei loro compagni di etichetta (EchO), e come per gli amici bresciani, la band si dimostra già matura per il grande salto in una big label. 'Cold Redrafted' è infatti un ottimo lavoro, dotato di un certo carisma e di una spiccata personalità, che auspico venga sapientemente convogliata nella giusta direzione anche in futuro, perché probabilmente sentiremo parlare dei Negative Voice per lungo tempo.

Negative Voice est un groupe russe de Melodic Death/Doom Metal à l’histoire travaillé. Le groupe est actif entre 1999-2000 sous le nom de Valhalla. Ensuite devient Negative Voice existe entre 2000 et 2004 mais sans sortir aucun album. Ensuite il reprend ses activité en 2010 et il reste actif et en bonne santé. Depuis son album Infinite Dissonance sorti en 2013 qui a eu un bon accueil voici alors le nouvel album du groupe qui se nomme Cold Redrafted.

Au menu il y a du changement : d’abord le groupe qui avant était un trio se trouve aujourdh’ui formé par quatre musiciens qui sont le nouveau bassiste Alex Nikolskiy, Evgeniy Loginov (voix et guitare), Andrey Samsonov (guitare) e Konstantin Pavlov (batterie). L’autre changement concerne la musique qui se detache de la rigide étiquette Melodic Death/Doom Metal pour aller piocher plutôt dans le post black metal avec un soupçon de progressive et de blackgaze. Cette mue vers des sonorités plus éthérés est la bienvenu puisque le groupe évolue très à l’aise dans ce registre.

Ce que Negative Voice fait très bien c’est de balancer les ambiances. La matrice, le socle est donné par une structure death metal avec des tempi doom. A ceci il faut rajouter un côté plus progressif qui anime et dilate les chansons ainsi qu’un travail profond sur les voix qui sont multipliées et à la fois grunt et clean. Le groupe fait dans le sombre, dramatique, mais cette ambiance est multiple et variée grâce aux progressions, aux accélérations, aux ralentissement et comme dit grâce au travail porté sur la voix, les voix. Et tout ceci pendant toute la durée de l’album. Negative Voice fait un très bon travail à tel point que l’on écoute l’album d’une traite et avec plaisir.

On peut dire alors que ce virage vers un côté post black metal est plus qu’assume et laisser entrevoir un bel avenir pour Negative Voice.

Sie kommen aus Moskau und gründeten sich bereits im Jahr 2000. Allerdings erschien ihr Debütalbum "Infinite Dissonanz" erst im Jahre 2013. Dieses zweite Album nennt sich "Cold Redrafted" und strahlt schon vom Cover her Kälte aus. Ihr Doom mit teils Deathvocals klingt aber eher wohlig warm. Mit dem Eröffner "Limitation" dieser Platte bauen sie langsam Druck auf, und das passiert ihnen immer wieder nach entspannteren Phasen mit lieblich leisen Vocals. Sonst wird schon rougher geshoutet. Es wird wohl öfters draufgehauen, wie in "Nightmare Everlasting" heftige Anflüge von Doublebassattacken zeigen. Sonst wird dabei nichts zu heftig oder zu düster. Sie tauchen immer wieder auf und der Verfasser dieser Zeilen kann sich nicht helfen, die Leads kommen nach denen von Sisters Of Mercy. Unterm Strich sind das acht leichtverdauliche Songs, in die auch Progger reinhören können.

Well someone has come from the Black Emo Doom/ Avant metal realm and wanted to put there stamp on it as this reminds me of bands like KLMT 1918, Katatonia, Antimatter, Daylight Dies, Moonspell and Paradise Lost. The band has a mastery of melancholy and despair in the music that they create. The gothic/ cold wave over tones white washed into the metallic style really make you feel the sorrow and pain in the music that Negative voice creates. There are Black metal elements that come out of the band but its very music in the Blackgaze style that bands like Alcest and Lantlos.. You know where I'm going the mix of Dreamy, Nightmares, Hope and a wall of reverb on the guitars. This is once again an emotional filled journey and if you like the bands I mentioned in review this will be a win for you album collection.

Ritroviamo i russi Negative Voice qualche anno dopo l’esordio su lunga distanza, Infinite Dissonance, che ne aveva messo in luce le potenzialità in qualità di band autrice di un death doom melodico di grande prospettiva.

Oggi il gruppo si ripresenta con diverse novità: infatti, oltre ad essere diventato un quartetto con l’ingresso del bassista di Alex Nikolskiy ad affiancare Evgeniy Loginov (voce e chitarra), Andrey Samsonov (chitarra) e Konstantin Pavlov (batteria), spicca quale elemento di discontinuità con il recente passato un sound meno dipendente dai modelli che emergevano in maniera decisa nel precedente lavoro (Daylight Dies) per spingersi verso lidi post metal e progressivi, andando a collocare i moscoviti su un piano simile, pur sempre con differenze sostanziali, agli attuali compagni di etichetta (Echo).

Questa parziale metamorfosi arriva tutto sommato inattesa visto che le parziali deroghe all’ortodossia del death doom melodico non facevano, comunque, presagire uno spostamento così deciso verso sonorità più eteree e progressive, nel senso lato del termine; la cosa più importante è comunque il fatto che questa “muta” si compie tramite un’esibizione sempre fluida ed impeccabile.

Se permane una certa drammaticità di fondo, la componente melodica si sviluppa prevalentemente nei passaggi in clean vocals sovrapposti, per lo più, a suoni rarefatti ed è proprio l’alternanza con le sempre presenti progressioni di matrice death doom a donare all’album il brillante eclettismo che lo rende meritevole di attenzione.

Ed ecco così che Cold Redrafted regala tre quarti d’ora di musica evoluta, nervosa e melodica allo stesso tempo, dove i numi tutelari divengono gli Opeth piuttosto che i campioni del death doom: una scelta che in un primo tempo potrà spiazzare gli appassionati di quest’ultimo genere ma che, dopo diversi ascolti, troverà inevitabile condivisione alla luce della qualità espressa dalla band russa.

Nightmare Everlasting e Lighthouse sono i brani in cui i Negative Voice riescono a far convivere al meglio le due anime, ma tutto sommato l’intero lavoro si mantiene su livelli molto simili, evidenziando peraltro proprietà esecutive che consentono loro di spingersi in passaggi impegnativi dal punto di vista tecnico senza uscirne ridimensionati.

Un disco riuscito che, se ci fa perdere una potenziale band di primo livello in ambito death doom, ce ne fa acquisire una nuova di zecca in grado di produrre un sound relativamente fresco e sicuramente stimolante.
