A due anni dallo splendido esordio intitolato “Obsessions”, si ripresentano i Notturno, progetto di Vittorio Sabelli per il quale appare riduttivo circoscrivere l’attività al solo ambito metal, visto che stiamo parlando di un musicista di estrazione classica e con un passato rilevante nel jazz, ma capace di spaziare attraverso i diversi generi mantenendo sempre intatta un perizia esecutiva e compositiva appannaggio di pochi (basti rammentare anche quanto fatto in tempi recenti con Dawn of a Dark Age, Incantvm e A.M.E.N.). Quello in oggetto è per l’artista molisano l’incarnazione probabilmente più intima e sofferta, in quanto il depressive black viene approcciato nel suo versante più poetico e soffuso, facendo scaturire dal contrasto tra partiture a tratti definibili cameristiche e lo scream sempre lacerante di Kjiel (Eyelessight, Angor Animi) una gamma di sensazioni capaci di incidere in profondità.

“Inside” si estende per qualche minuto in più del precedente lavoro e, se possibile, appare ancor più dirompente dal punto di vista dell’impatto emotivo grazie a quattro brani (più intro strumentale) che avvincono e convincono facendo sprofondare l’ascoltatore in una dimensione altra, dove la disperazione e lo sconforto assumono una consistenza quasi fisica senza ricorrere, per assurdo, a soluzioni sonore particolarmente estreme. Infatti, Sabelli prepara il terreno alle sfuriate di matrice DSBM ricorrendo a strumenti acustici così come al suo amato clarinetto e il tutto scorre con una fluidità e un’intensità riscontrabili di rado; a dare un contributo importante alla riuscita dell’opera, oltre al sempre efficace batterista francese Aeternus (Sven Vinat), troviamo anche Davide Straccione, vocalist degli Shores of Null, che offre le sue calde tonalità clean in alcuni brani, tra cui “Once Again”, traccia che emerge per la sua bellezza in quanto di più immediata assimilazione, apparendo subito quale vero e proprio stato dell’arte di come il connubio tra l’afflato melodico e l’asprezza del black e dello scream portino il tutto su un piano che rasenta la perfezione.

“Inside” è una gemma preziosa che deve trovare uno spazio doveroso affinché i Notturno possano emettere la propria luce all’interno di una scena underground quanto mai affollata e in cui, troppo spesso, ricevono spinte incomprensibili realtà musicali che non possiedono un’oncia del talento a disposizione di Vittorio Sabelli.

Il nuovo disco dei Notturno, intitolato “Inside” in uscita tramite la Hypnotic Dirge Recirds, prende corpo con cinque tracce di depressive black metal che superano abbondantemente la mezz’ora di esecuzione offrendo un contesto melodico, oscuro, triste e pacato in cui il clean scream femminile, assai espressivo e coinvolgente, riesce a rendere l’idea del senso di oppressione e depressione che lo caratterizza. Al di là di una buona produzione l’aspro rancore inizia a prendere corpo nel secondo brano alternando depressione a rabbia e odio; quanto al contesto strutturale dei brani essi si sviluppano prevalentemente su basi acustiche, di tanto in tanto sferzate da distorti non troppo propositivi ma che comunque cercano ancora di più di mettere in evidenza il tutto. Dopo l’opener strumentale “Peace”, è la volta di “Autumn Leaves” un brano diviso ed alternato tra una sofferenza pacata ben espressa anche con l’ausilio di suoni cullanti e con distorti sviluppati su una ritmica non troppo accelerata; anche “Obsession” si propone con un acustico di chitarra piuttosto oscuro dove ancora una volta la protagonista è la depressione esternata dallo straziante cantato di Kjiel; si prosegue poi con “Once Again” un brano inizialmente assai elementare nella propria struttura ma che poi si sviluppa in una andatura maggiormente propositiva tra distorti e mid tempo facendo la differenza; il platter si chiude con lo straziante “No Passion”, altra prova ai limiti del delirante sotto il profilo espressivo. Inside è dunque un disco che raggiunge il proprio punto focale attraverso l’incredibile espressività del clean ma sotto un profilo compositivo, abbastanza semplice nei contenuti, forse avrebbe potuto osare qualcosa in più.

Get ready to get sad! Italian depressive/atmospheric black metal band Notturno return with their second album called Inside, it couldn’t be more introspective if it was able to see through itself. It also seems to take a similar path for each of the four main songs as acoustic guitars, build into grief stricken screams and dissonance that comes from raw guitar riffs, before falling back into acoustic meandering on Autumn Leaves or pianos on Obessions a track named after their debut album.

The latter features I think a hurdy gurdy, but I could be mistaken, but that’s some of the varied instrumentation you get on this dense album. Vittøriø Sabelli’s brainchild is very layered in its sound, but for me the black metal parts are probably the weakest, though the vocals of Kjiel and special guest Davide Straccione (Shores of Null) are both suitably anguished for what is band who happily dwell in the maudlin, Davide crooning on Once Again against the flute and more acoustics.

Notturo are essentially an atmospheric folk band with black metal elements, the sound of autumn turning to winter. Inside is an intriguing listen. 7/10

Delicate note di pianoforte, come se gli Anathema fossero quelli di vent'anni fa, ci introducono al nuovo album dei Notturno intitolato, con grande cognizione di causa, "Inside" e rilasciato, ancora una volta, dalla Hypnotic Dirge Records.

Parlavo del titolo: questo è un lavoro che ti scava dentro, va in profondità, accede agli anfratti più remoti del tuo animo e ti lascia, solo ed inerme, con il tuo io, in un contatto strettissimo e maledettamente doloroso.

Il Depressive Black Metal del gruppo italiano sconquassa il tuo sentire e lo fa, qui sta la grandezza, con un approccio distante anni luce dalle tante band che si cimentano con un genere tanto estremo e "particolare": "Inside", dunque, non è un album tradizionale, ma è una sorta di esperimento che, unendo linee tra di loro divergenti, riesce a tracciare un sentiero fatto si di malinconia, ma ricco, anche, di rabbia, di volontà di rivalsa e di approcci sonori multiformi capaci di fondere il gelo del nero, l'eleganza della musica da camera, l'ineluttabilità del doom più epico e la straziante forza catartica della musica estrema, elementi che, tutti assieme, creano una atmosfera da sogno, magica nella sua apparente immaterialità.

Dietro al microfono Kjiel emoziona ad ogni nota, ed il suo scream disperato, così come i suoi sussurri sfocati, lasciano una patina di ghiaccio sulla pelle dell'ascoltatore e vengono magnificati dalla voce maschile di Davide Straccione (Shores of Null) in un matrimonio artistico che spezza, letteralmente, il cuore portandoti "dentro", a profondità abissali.

A tutto il resto ci pensa il genio di Vittøriø Sabelli che scrive cinque brani squisiti nel loro essere eleganti e drammatici al tempo stesso, sia quando le chitarre sibilano come lupi inferociti, sia quando delicati arpeggi ti avvolgono come le braccia della persona amata, sia, ancora, quando sono strumenti non "standard" a diventare protagonisti di un album cerebrale e carnale che fa molto più male del sale su una ferita aperta che sanguina.

I Notturno sono cantori dell'autunno, delle foglie che, lente, svolazzano verso il suono, sono i custodi della rabbiosa volontà di fuggire da un mondo che sta andando in rovina, sono creatori di emozioni, sofferenti, che si abbatteranno su di voi come una tempesta ignara dalla vostra piccolezza dopo la quale, come in una metamorfosi, non sarete mai più gli stessi.

Se la musica esiste per trasmettere un messaggio a chi l'ascolta, un messaggio vero che sgorga dal profondo di chi la crea e la suona, allora i Notturno sono musicisti veri e spudoratamente sinceri per come si sono guardati dentro ed hanno trasmesso il loro buio a noi ascoltatori, rendendoci partecipi, ed attori, del loro dolore.

Extreme metal is perhaps one of the most aptly titled genres of music – pushing the boundaries of sonic art as far as they can. Black metal, in particular, truly embodies the breadth of meaning this carries. While death metal and grind certainly deliver on the sonic and sometimes visual elements, neither truly commit to the emotional extremity that is so regularly expressed through black metal. Black metal is commitment to the extreme, through corpse paint and blast beats, through troubled history and radical new worlds. Notturno seek to explore the inner ranges of extremity, mining downward to find something fundamental buried Inside.

Formed in 2022, Notturno came prepared and immediately debuted their first record Obsessions, and after its release started work on this follow-up LP. Despite this projects’ scant 18-month lifespan, the members are grizzled veterans of the scene. The band is headed by Vittorio Sabelli, best known as the primary instrumentalist of Dawn of a Dark Age, joined by drummer Sven Vinat of Himinbjorg. The lineup is finished by vocalist Kjiel, known for her work in a number of other DSBM projects, including Lifeless and Sacrimoon.

My earlier discussion of extreme metal’s linguistic nature was not merely waxing poetic, but reflective of the expectations set by both listener and musician. Black metal may be the genre most committed to the idea of artistic totality – from the album art, to the body art, to the sonic noise, everything about black metal is steeped in maximalist tendencies towards everything, and why not? The beauty in this is an embracement of sensory rapture. But this makes a mark on any band that chooses to consciously steer away from this sense of totality, and Notturno do choose to approach differently.

Intro track “Peace” is aptly titled, featuring a hauntingly beautiful piano passage accompanied by orchestral instruments, but not for the grandiosity of orchestra, but rather the rich depth of sound that embodies a kind of aching tranquility, one already lost to the future. This leads into “Autumn Leaves”, which carries this feeling of melancholic peace forward on acoustic guitar. The twang of the strings and slight reverb over barely audible orchestral strings is the bedding upon which Kjiel’s first engagement is placed, but as a breathy spoken word section that she seems to struggle just to utter, to admit to herself and the listener. The instrumentation slowly picks up but continues to sound closer to a neo-classical/folk guitar track than anything resembling black metal. This makes the eventual shift towards Kjiel’s harsh vox and Sabelli’s wonderfully melodic electric guitar hit even harder, like the anguish being expressed can no longer be captured through traditional musical elements and must be brought forth through painful and wretched methods.

As “Autumn Leaves” evolves, the vocals are fleshed out by low cleans from guest vocalist Davide Straccione of Shores of Null, that lend further character to the emotion being painted on the canvas of Inside, dancing between spoken word and harsh screeching, acoustic and electric. This powerful dynamic sound is the signature element of the record, carving a wide range of expression across the roughly 36 minutes, angular aggression trailing off into beautiful woodwind and piano, before the energy picks back up again. Leaves don’t fall from trees all at once; the seasonal shift is gradual but inevitable, like a spectre looming on the horizon.

“Obsessions” is a track built around an acoustic riff that keeps playing, building up around this central pillar, unable to let go of this one motif that carries from the beginning of the record, and even when the audible parts of that riff drop away, the structure it has created remains, a negative space that lingers waiting to be refilled. The atonal piano keys that start appearing a few minutes in feel like stab wounds that slowly come to drown out the harsher black metal before it spotlights. “Once Again” starts with very blackgaze-y open notes, dripping with reverb and pain, and is the most heavily black metal track on the record, but still finds room for dynamic audio, like the extended acoustic section with flute and a long display of Straccione’s rich voice. When the drums and electric guitar finally return while he sings it feels electrifying, and Kjiel feels like she carries more fervor in her voice. Final track “No Passion” features some wonderful plucky acoustic accompaniment to Kjiel harsh scream-speaking, the words achingly wrought from her gut.

The production on Inside is full of space, with appropriate weight given to the bottom end yet not so much as to bury the rest of the compositions. The various non-metal elements sit perfectly in the middle and are still completely audible throughout the record even alongside harsher and heavier components, and when parts are less audible it comes with intention and purpose.

That classical and acoustic instrumentation feature so heavily on this record without approaching anything resembling symphonic black metal is a fascinating accomplishment, because I think if you broke it down there might actually be a higher amount of non-metal elements on Inside than metal. Yet this feels so intentional in craft that it actually allows the black metal sections to carry more weight, to feel more wrought and harsh. While these elements are nothing new to the genre, the band has committed an essentialization of the black metal sound through its larger absence in the sonic template of Inside. In sloughing off the excess of black metal totality, and exploring inward to the inner boundaries of the genre, Notturno have found a deeper and more dynamic fundamental black metal truth.

Notturno is a depressive black metal band with a sense of adventure, following the flavor of the emotional journey rather than genre script. Their willingness to so heavily involve non-black metal material allows the metal to feel punchier and more impactful. Inside is one of the most dynamic black metal records I’ve heard in years.
