This is absolutely amazing. I mean, really, really amazing. It’s one of those albums where I think “It’s hard to believe human beings made something so beautiful”. While I never heard of Notturno before Hypnotic Dirge sent me three of their albums to review, I did some research and found out that one of the members was in Himinbjorg and another in Handful Of Hate… two bands I know and love very much.

As soon as the album starts you are greeted with sublime music played by guitars, drums and cellos. Rael cellos and not cellos recreated with a keyboard, and they are very well played. The musicianship is phenomenal. I’d say most of the music on “Our” is acoustic Folk/Neo-Folk music, but the album also has a healthy dose of depressive Black Metal as well. It’s hard to believe just two musicians are taking care of all of the music here. Most of the time the album has a sad, lonely and eerie vibe and I just can't get enough of this.

The vocals are some of the best I’ve ever heard. Kjiel has numerous styles she uses with ease. A beautiful clean vocal style, a style where she sounds like she’s grieving heavily and a pure Black Metal wail and everything In between. Her voice is as varied as the different notes that can be plucked on a guitar.

The album was mixed by Stefan Traumuller who did a wonderful job getting all of those traditional instruments to sound well with the Metal.

The cover art is a photo of a woman in a flower garden or maybe a cemetery. She’s holding a sword and wearing a beautiful red dress. This cover is amazing! Inside of the digipak there is another photo of the same woman (I’m assuming it is the vocalist) and the back panel has the tracklist and a photo of a woman’s hand caressing a skull.

If I had heard “Our” last year it would have been toward the top of my Best Of 2024 list. It is perfect in every aspect. The music, the vocals, the production and the great photography that sets the mood of the album so well. I recommend this on a level I can’t even explain. The passion of these musicians on this album needs to reach as many ears as possible. Thankfully Hypnotic Dirge sent me two other Notturno albums that I will be reviewing soon, and I hope we get more albums from the band in the future. Seriously, you need this and since it’s limited to 500 copies, you better hurry. Thank you to all involved with this release.

Eccoli tornare i nostrani Notturno, una formazione dove il dolore e la devastazione emotiva piuttosto che fisica la fa da padrone con squarci rabbiosi.

Dopo una strumentale apertura che ha un qualcosa di inquietante con quel piano, ma anche il clarinetto non scherza si passa a “ Inside” dove il mood malinconico è dato dalle chitarre acustiche che dipingono uno scenario triste e sconsolato per poi lasciare colpire la frontwoman Kjiel che alterna un timbro pulito quasi recitato a screaming nella parte più elettrica.

A seguire ecco “Anymore”, anche in questo caso le chitarre acustiche con pochi accordi sanno creare un’atmosfera lugubre e mette il carico la singer con un tono sofferto sospeso tra sussurri e una voce bassa ma che reca una portata dolorosa con l’inserimento di clarino a fare la melodia da collegamento.

Il tutto poi prende una piega più rabbiosa con il riff elettrico e la batteria con uno screaming alto e rabbioso; la chitarra è minimale ma adeguata al contesto estremo.

Con la conclusiva “Doors” ecco che il piano con poche note sa evocare toni dimessi e mesti, una melodia funebre con il tono recitato della singer che sembra quasi ansimare nel tirare fuori queste parole come se le costassero fatica.

Il clarino basso fa interventi mirati a consolidare il mood funereo; poi ecco arrivare il mid tempo doom disperato con le chitarre che intessono melodie fosche e crepuscolari.

Un disco che è un atto di dolore, disperazione, dove tutto è in disfacimento emotivo; da prendere a piccole dosi se siete depressi.

rom Bandcamp, “Similarly to previous NOTTURNO albums, the sound is rooted in atmospheric and depressive black metal with the additional of classical instruments incorporated into the compositions only adding to the rich sonic tapestry, though perhaps never as seamlessly as on this latest album. Kjiel's vulnerable and desperate vocals hover over the musical layers creating a vivid reflection of anguish and melancholy.” The album has five songs, and “Adagio” is first. It enters with an air of dark mystery, like you have discovered a door deep in a cave that is clearly man-made. What lies on the other side? “Inside” is the first proper track, and it enters gently once again. There is an air of desperation in the clean female vocals…I don’t know exactly what she is saying but her voice is hasty and shaky. Later, they turn to anguished screams, and you can feel the hot breath of each note.

“Anymore” has a similar depressing sound, and her vocal screams continue with deep pain. A few minutes in comes piano and a harder, darker riff, not overly distorted, but it’s the vocals that carry much of the sound. “Paranoia” is more ardent in nature, with a hasty entering riff and some energy that seems to come from someone who is running for their lives from something chasing them that they can’t quite make out. “Doors” closes the album, and the hasty sounds are gone. It seems the chase is over, either physically or mentally, but you have no idea what happened to them. Her clean vocals plead with you, plead for your help. But the depressive piano tones suggest no such help is coming.

This was a good album, but I would have liked to have heard more songs. The strictly despondent ones were full of emotion, and the more ardent ones provided a nice balance on the album. It wasn’t quite as rich and full of a sound as I had hoped for however.

Je to podivnost. V základu nejspíš depresivní doom nebo black metal, ale forma a výrazivo je zvláštní. Chce to čas do toho proniknout, ale stojí to vůbec za to? Sám nevím. Mám rád postupnou gradaci v hudbě, co se však odehrává na této nahrávce je něco dotaženého do extrému. Přitom samotný úvod „Adagio“ je působivé intro doprovázené hrou na basový klarinet. Klarinet a jeho tlustší bráška mají svojí roli v průběhu celé nahrávky. To by naznačovalo, že autor s přesahem do klasické hudby zvolí subtilnější a harmoničtější přístup. Jenže z této milné premisy je posluchač pomalu vyveden. Píšu pomalu, protože hudba na této nahrávce je vesměs melancholická pomalá hra na emoce.

Celá skladba „Inside“ vlastně není nic jiného než postupné nabalování na intenzitě na ploše mnoha dlouhých minut. Začíná se od vybrnkávání, vzápětí se přidá zpěv. Zpěv? To je možná největší podivnost. On tam zpěv vlastně vůbec není. Projev této ženštiny je specifikum samo o sobě. Zpočátku spíš utrápené frázování nebo různě intenzivní šeptání, které v projevu zoufalství postupně nabírá na intenzitě až k chrlení slov na prahu šílenství, hysterie, vzteku a agónie. Když to nakonec kulminuje, přijde zklidnění, znovu trochu bouře a je konec. Koncepčně vlastně v pořádku, ale tou dobou už se dávno dostavily pochyby o duševním zdraví kapelníka. Na dvou předchozích albech, která jsou podobně schizofrenní, kapela více využívala skokové změny mezi akustickými pasážemi a šílenstvím. Na „Our“ se stále dokola ke svým běsům dopracovává. A tak i následná „Anymore“ je postupné propadání temnotě.

„Paranoia“ je postavená na v podstatě punkovém základu, který opět v samotném závěru přejde v hysterické vřeštění. A závěrečné „Doors“ začne znovu od intimních základů. Piano, akustika, klarinet, v podstatě komorní hudba, nebýt toho pláče či řevu týrané ženy na pozadí. Zrychlování a nářek se přerývá v řev. Instrumentálně to není špatné, jen je to takové neučesané. Je to záměr? Nepochybně. Bicí mají svou dynamiku, kytara svou hru na ponurou náladu zvládá také dobře a občas dá prostor pianu. Oba klarinety dodávají zvuk komorní hudby. Do toho až absurdní exprese emocí. Jako celek to je zvláštní. NOTTURNO je projekt, kde schopný muzikant dává prostor své choré mysli.

Terza uscita in tre anni per gli italiani Notturno, progetto del polistrumentista Vittoriø Sabelli (Dawn of a Dark Age, Incantvm) che continua il suo percorso artistico attraverso una musica che striscia tra black metal depressivo e una buona dose di influenze classiche.Quella dei Notturno è però una proposta che si distacca abbondantemente dal tipico suono nero più atmosferico, lasciando invece che le pulsioni più estreme non diventino mai il fulcro dei vari brani, quanto piuttosto una delle tante caratteristiche.

Ciò che troviamo dentro i quasi quaranta minuti di questo “Our” è un’ulteriore evoluzione dei precedenti “Inside” e “Obsessions” verso un qualcosa di più organico e dal feel quasi acustico, anche nelle parti più estreme, che vengono usate per evidenziare i momenti più drammatici sorretti dalla voce pregna di disperazione della brava Kjiel.

“Inside” è un buon esempio di come si costruisce un brano su pochi ma efficaci melodie, abbellite da arrangiamenti di chitarre acustiche, in una triste marcia che aumenta la sua intensità verso metà, lambendo territori mai troppo estremi ma pregni di un disagio espresso da urla laceranti.

I Notturno dimostrano però anche di volersi addentrare in costruzioni più complesse, in cui strumenti classici come il clarinetto e il clarinetto basso fanno capolino tra il lento strisciare della lunga “Anymore”, le cui chitarre accompagnano un incedere quasi doom stemperato da note di pianoforte e un finale in cui la velocità si alza parecchio rispetto alla media dell’album.

Non mancano episodi decisamente metal, come la quasi strumentale “Paranoia”, in cui si accantona in parte la componente classica ed acustica in favore di un approccio più monolitico e pesante con tanto di blast-beat, dissonanze e intermezzi quasi ambient ad anticipare un finale inquietante, anche grazie ad un tappeto di strumenti classici subdolo e decisamente inusuale; è proprio questo, forse, il brano che presenta al meglio le potenzialità espressive dei Notturno.

La conclusiva “Doors” rappresenta invece l’altra faccia della medaglia, con un incedere cinematografico e ossessivo nel suo ripetere un tema principale, su cui si arrampicano partiture di fiati a rincorrersi ed un crescendo di chitarre quasi post-rock che accendono uno sparuto momento di violenza, prima di collassare in un finale languido, drammatico e, appunto, notturno.

Tra le varie incarnazioni dell’anima musicale di Sabelli, quella dei Notturno rappresenta sicuramente quella più intima ed emozionale, in cui il metal è utilizzato come ulteriore veicolo espressivo senza mai eccedere, ad esempio, negli abissi estremi di un progetto come Intantvm. Quello che sembra uscire dai solchi di questo “Our” è una mesta descrizione delle più desolanti emozioni umane, espresse attraverso una musica che vuole essere estrema più nella sostanza che nella forma.

Un lavoro non per tutti, leggermente sotto al precedente “Inside” per la dimensione delle idee espresse e che si trova pericolosamente in bilico tra due mondi (quello metal per l’approccio e quello classico per lo spettro di strumenti usati) rischiando di non accontentare pienamente nessuno dei due: una scelta comunque decisamente coraggiosa, meritevole di rispetto e capace di rendere degno di attenzione questo album.
