Zo af en toe vind ik het wel eens leuk om in het diepe te springen en iets te gaan beluisteren waarvan ik eigenlijk geen hoge verwachtingen heb. Dit was ook mijn gedachte toen ik de promo van het debuut van het Servische Tišina (spreek uit als Tishina) kreeg voorgeschoteld. Met band- en album-naam en songtitels en-teksten volledig in het cyrillisch schrift vond ik dit wel intrigerend. Omwille van de leesbaarheid gebruik ik uiteraard zoveel mogelijk onze eigen letters. Overigens betekent Tishina stilte, albumtitel Uvod betekent zoiets als eerste keer, introductie.

Tishina is in 2020 opgericht door de Servische muzikant Branislav Panić, voornamelijk bekend van de melodieuze death / black-band Bane. Hij begon de band oorspronkelijk als een zijproject om de langzamere, diepere en meer emotionele kant van muziek te verkennen. De inspiratie voor het eerste album, Uvod... kwam vooral uit het gedichtenboek Nad Vodama Aheronta, geschreven door de Servische auteur Predrag Rava.

De muziek van Tishina laat zich het best omschrijven als een melodieuze death / doom-mix. Vooral zeer atmosferisch, overwegend gevat in uitgesponnen tracks. Voor een debuutalbum is Uvod... een indrukwekkend, samenhangend en krachtig melodieus doom metal-album, dat een voortreffelijke mix van pakkende riffs in het middentempo, licht zwartgeblakerde secties en aangename wisselingen in sfeer en toon. De compositorische en instrumentale vaardigheden van Panić staan buiten kijf, dat vertaalt zich in het gemak waarmee de nummers (en ook het album als geheel) voort-meanderen, met een bijna perfect gevoel voor richting, doel, en tempo. Luister daarvoor maar eens naar afsluiter Zauvek, met z'n verbluffende basgitaar-partijen.

Langzame, stabiele leadgitaar-tonen openen het album, met op als ondergrond een heerlijk logge ritmesectie. De zang is een lekker in het gehoor liggende lage grunt, en de stemming is overwegend deprimerend. Ja, inderdaad, melodieuze doom uit het boekje. Niet al te origineel, maar wel verdomd lekker! Ter vergelijking kun je denken aan bands als Saturnus, October Tide, Mourning Beloveth. De vier composities (plus intermezzo Uteha) laten zich beluisteren als een prachtig geheel, waarop je heerlijk weg kunt dromen.

Op dit album doet Branislav Panić vrijwel alles in z'n eentje. Het album werd in 2020 geschreven en het jaar daarop opgenomen in verschillende thuisstudio's voordat het eindelijk een nette behandeling kreeg. De Tsjechische multi-instrumentalist en technicus Honza Kapak deed het mixen en masteren in z'n eigen HellSound Studio, en speelde ook de drumpartijen in.

Het duo komt dus voor de dag met een atmosferisch half uurtje aan puur genot, dat niet onder doet voor de gekende namen wat mij betreft. Mijn oorspronkelijke verwachtingen zijn zwaar overtroffen, een aanrader voor de liefhebber!

Desde siempre había coqueteado con diferentes tipos de sustancias alucinógenas. Mientras que estaba bajo sus efectos, la tristeza y la soledad que le atenazaba con fuerza el alma desaparecían. Era entonces cuando la falsa felicidad lo embargaba. Daba igual lo irreal que fuese. El dolor se mitigaba y con ello era suficiente. Era consciente de que más temprano que tarde perdería la cabeza. Tan solo esperaba que cuando sucediese, se mantuviera en un limbo donde el quebranto existencial que lo atormentaba no tuviese lugar…

Bienvenidos al universo de Тишина.

«Увод . . .» es el título del primer Larga Duración de los Melo Doom Death metaleros Тишина. Apareció en el mercado el 30 de mayo de 2022 gracias a Satanath Records, Hypnotic Dirge Records y The End Of Time Records.

Al conjunto le insuflan vida las siguientes personas: Branislav Panić (voz, guitarra, bajo), Honza Kapak (batería).

Ay señor, qué difícil resulta siempre escribir reseñas. En cada artículo, se mezcla tanto los sentimientos que ha causado el disco que se comenta, como los conocimientos sobre la materia y el hecho de intentar ser lo más objetivo posible. En ocasiones se pasa la mano, porque hay suficientes elementos de calidad a lo largo de los tracks. Otras veces, nada puede salvarlos de la quema. Lo complicado viene cuando hay una guerra interna en un servidor. Sé que el disco de hoy no es malo ni de lejos, mas tampoco me ha llamado nada la atención. Entonces, ¿cómo debo de enfocar la crítica? Pues como siempre, lo mejor que pueda.

No amigos, no me ha gustado el debut de los de Canadá. La razón de ello, es que me ha resultado más edulcorado de la cuenta. Deseaba mayor rotundidad en las seis cuerdas y más giros de dirección dentro de los límites establecidos de este tipo de música. Eso no quita que las composiciones tengan gancho y que todo esté más que en su sitio. Ya se sabe, casi todo lo que viene del nombrado país es cuanto menos especial. Entonces, a estas alturas, os preguntaréis, «¿vale la pena escucharlo o estamos ante un disco del montón?» Para saber la respuesta, tendréis que seguir leyendo hasta el final.

Las «hachas» vienen dando a manos llenas raciones de dramatismo. Los riffs a decadentes dobles armonías son los protagonistas del método compositivo de Branislav Panić y Honza Kapak. Cabe resaltar que también se atreven con instantes pausados y con ataques de tremolo picking si la ocasión lo requiere.

Poco puedo describir sobre los desgarradores registros vocales. No hay sorpresa negativa en dicho apartado.

Siempre es positivo descubrir que el bajo no entra por la puerta de atrás para acabar pasando desapercibido a lo largo y ancho del Long Play. Si os gustan las cuatro cuerdas, estad atentos a ‘Из мртвог угла‘ y ‘Две црне руже‘.

Por supuestísimo, la percusión va siempre a medio gas. ¿Qué esperabais, blast beats a diestro y siniestro?

La inicial ‘Из мртвог угла‘ con ese regustillo a los actuales Paradise Lost y ‘Јутро последњег дана‘ han sido los cortes que más llamaron mi atención.

Bueno, hemos llegado al final. Ahora bien, llegó la hora de confesar si os valdría la pena catar «Увод . . .». Obviamente sí.

Uvod grabbed me with that cover alone, and true to the label, it is hypnotic enough that I no longer remember how or where I heard about it. I feel like I’ve been inducted into an occult society and need to await further contact. For the record itself, ’tis a syncretic little tablet of morosity, with some goth rock melodrama listing about suspended in the haze of funeral doom hymnal and melodic black metal séance. The twin-toned guitar approach, qua overtly shimmery and airy contra stringent and stern, eschews the drifting dire of Doom 101 and lays its foundation on melodies both pensive and persistent. When the smoke starts to swirl you’ll recognize the silhouetted forms of Ahab and Katatonia swinging the censers, with the tiniest brimstone whiff reminiscent of whichever Batushka you prefer. I am not gifted in the Serbian tongue, but I’m sure the lyrics cribbed from some poet I’ve never heard of are suitably dour to the spirit. From my first glance, I took Uvod to be a particularly esoteric art project, but it’s grown on me very quickly as an enticing emotional doom release, seizing on depth and dimension to be. — A Spooky Mansion

Serbia país de Europa del este que ha pasado por conflictos bélicos durante algunas etapas de su joven vida, encuentra escape a crudas realidades a través del arte, la música es indispensable para renacer de catástrofes, Branislav Panic crea Tishina lo hace usando poemas de Pedrag Rava y nos entregan su álbum debut Uvod.

La portada del disco es de Aleksandra Panic, artista de origen serbio y representa a un “guardián del silencio” Tishina significa silencio y Uvod introducción, entonces todo empieza a conectar, se me hace una excelente elección para su primer disco, el cual abre con Iz Mrtvog Ugla de inmediato se perciben influencias de Saturnus y Mourning Beloveth, me atrapan las capas de la guitarra, la cual crea una atmosfera un tanto melancólica, la voz ruge, pero más que salvaje suena aletargada como si se tratara de un orco que sobrevivió a una épica batalla y nos narra desde su ángulo como fue que atravesó la muerte.

Ocho minutos después el orco ahora nos presenta Dve Crne Ruze pasajes más melódicos ¿se imaginan un orco con sentimientos buenos? Más que gritos de furia podrían interpretarse como gritos de lamento, un par de rosas negras para los muertos en el campo de batalla.

Uteha es el consuelo mientras el orco toma aliento para seguir cantando y llega Jutro Poslednjeg Dana, ¿qué pensarían si llega la mañana del último día de sus vidas?, de saberlo, ¿Cambiarían algo? Ni yo lo sé...

El último tema llega con Zauvek, la guitarra con distorsión se mezcla de maravilla con la disonancia y melodía de la otra, la batería es marcada y seguida por el bajo el canto del orco termina de ensamblar el final de esta historia de 29 minutos dónde Tishina cierra de gran manera Uvod.

Sin duda Tishina podría lanzar una segunda parte de 5 temas completar la historia del orco serbio y sus andanzas.

At first I was afraid. I was petrified. Kept thinking… Didn’t anyone take a look at the cover artwork prior to the release of this record? It is weird, to say the least. Unfitting to what’s on the disc itself. It’s supposed to be a doom / death metal album, but the cover suggests some sort of a… Stoner? Psychedelic stuff perhaps? Some occult cosmic wandering? Who knows!? I really don’t get it.

Luckily, when one looks past the painting, there’s a real possibility of finding something interesting. But first a sort of a formal introduction into Тишина. This is a debut album by a band formed by the leading member of a Serbian melodic death / black metal band Bane, now residing in Canada. Actually, this might be considered a project, considering the fact that Mr. Panić is the only member of the band. Semantics, basically. On “Увод...“ he used the abilities of his long-time conspirator from Czech Republic, Mr. Honza Kapák, who handled the drums as well as mixing and mastering of the record in his own Hellsound Studio. Now that I think of it, Mr. Kapák’s recognizable style of drumming is somewhat lacking on this record, but more on that later on.

Essentially, like I mentioned above, this is an album that runs along the lines of doom / death metal. Like the band from which Mr. Panić originated, it is fairly melodic, but still melancholic enough and even more importantly, it remains on the extreme side of metal music and keeps the necessary heaviness. Another “guest” member would be Mr. Predrag Rava who handled the lyrics which suit perfectly to the “subject” offered in the music itself. What’s more, the lyrics are in Serbian which is a novelty in Mr. Panić’s creations. Imaginative as he proved to be on his previous efforts, he fitted them nicely within the weight of the world laying on their shoulders.

Now, the fact remains that “Увод...” is a well-crafted record, made by a person long enamoured with the genre at hand. Bands such as Katatonia, Tiamat, or October Tide are correct pointers to what Тишина stands for. Basically, all the most relevant names in this musical field are well respected and their legacy followed. And here’s the key word: followed.

The record does present a fine dose of creativity, but it still follows too closely in the footsteps of the greats. It is filled with predictable solutions with expected outcomes. It is exactly what the die-hard fans want, without much swerving around. Granted, like I said, the imagination is used (and used well) in crafting fine segments, neat guitar leads and bass accentuations. Avoiding the use of keyboards certainly left the tonnage of music intact, as does the vocal in dismissing the clean voice. Drums are perhaps the most “disappointing” aspect of the release. I know Mr. Kapák’s style in his many previous appearances. He has a distinct ability to play around the set, thus making any song as dynamic and versatile as possible, no matter the genre. However, I have a feeling he too just wanted to fall in line with the bare necessities of the genre at hand.

All that being said, you should not consider “Увод...” a failure. Not in the least bit. I mean, everything is in its right place on this record. It promises enjoyable time during the audition, particularly if you’re a big fan of doomy death metal and the bands mentioned above. Тишина offers just about enough of what you’re hoping for. Nothing less, but unfortunately nothing more. A doom / death metal album you’re used to hearing.

Right now, it is staying light until quite late but fortunately the past few days the weather has been bleak and miserable so it’s a perfect time to listen to a nice amount of death doom, up step Serbia’s Tishina unveiling something initially intended as a side project now present debut album Uvod… Immediately were in for an eight-minute ride with Iz Mrtvog Ugla – slow, purposely melancholic in tone make for a great start to a release that I’m already connecting with emotionally so when the opening riffs to Dve Crne Ruze start I’m left slightly puzzled with such a shift and although Tishina pull it back midway through, I do then question the necessity of the short (48 seconds) instrumental Uteha.

Fortunately, the next fifteen minutes are the redeeming quality of Uvod with both Jutro Poslednjeg Dana and Zauvek providing the heart of the album with the latter even being slight reminiscent of My Dying Bride’s The Cry Of Mankind minus the violins. Now if the album had ended there, I would’ve been more than fine with it but unfortunately the final track Tishina is another short instrumental piece that I just couldn’t connect with which is a shame as for a debut it’s themes, inspiration and imagery are wonderful, but I just couldn’t shake the negativity with the inclusion of some of the tracks. It is something in time that I might connect with further down the road, just not at this time. A nice inclusion into the death-doom circle.

Fundado por el músico serbio Branislav Panić (mejor conocido por la banda blackened death metal Bane), Tishina (Тишина) es un nuevo proyecto que se prepara para lanzar su álbum debut 'Uvod… (Увод…)' esta primavera.

Tishina (Тишина) se describe mejor como un proyecto de melodic doom/death metal que nació inicialmente como un proyecto paralelo para explorar el lado más lento, profundo y emocional de la música. La inspiración para el primer álbum 'Uvod... ('Увод...')' provino principalmente del libro de poemas 'Nad Vodama Aheronta', escrito por el autor serbio Predrag Rava.

Para un álbum debut, 'Увод...' es un impresionante álbum doom metal cohesivo y potente, que combina una exquisita combinación de riffs melódicos de ritmo medio, secciones ennegrecidas y varios cambios en la atmósfera y el tono a lo largo de su tiempo de reproducción. Sobre todo, la habilidad compositiva es evidente de inmediato, no en el sentido de riffs abiertamente técnicos, sino en la facilidad con la que estas canciones (y el álbum también como una sola entidad) fluyen con un sentido casi perfecto de dirección, propósito, y el impulso.

Musicalmente, algunas de las influencias son Saturnus, October Tide, Mourning Beloveth y Doom:VS, entre otros. El primer álbum se escribió durante 2020 y se grabó al año siguiente en varios estudios caseros antes de finalmente recibir el tratamiento adecuado en HellSound Studio en la República Checa. Honza Kapak (Master's Hammer, Bohemyst, ex-Avenger) hizo la mezcla y masterización y también estuvo a cargo de la batería en esta grabación.

Hailing from Serbia, and without any press information in their EPK, their Bandcamp page says that they were, “initially born as a side-project to explore the slower, deeper and more emotional side of music, we are a Doom/Death Metal project.” The album contains five tracks. “Из Мртвог Угла” opens the album. It’s an eight-minute beast, that begins with a slow, lumbering pace and thick guitars with some harmonies in them. Harsh vocals are the medium of choice. The melodies help to bring the Doomy sound out of the depths of Hell and into the light, but it’s a struggle. The landscapes that the band develops in this first song are rich and lush.

“Две Црне Руже” is little shorter, but still with some well-timed melodies to go along with the deep and dreary Doom sound. The harmonies in the chorus are almost hear-aching and you can feel his pain. “Утеха” is one-minute interlude of clean but solemn guitars. You can hear the band readying their energy for the next two strikes. “Јутро Последњег Дана” opens with some nifty guitar work and a powerful, heavy rhythm section. Harsh vocals rise above the burned out landscape of utter despair. It settles into a much darker sound around the half-way mark, but those melodies still brighten things up.

“Заувек” closes the album. It begins with some lead guitar parts and some slightly lighter tones, more akin to the Melodic Death Metal genre then Doom. An airy interlude connects the dots here and I like the approach in this song…it’s more melodic than the others. Overall, this was an enjoyable listen. Not knowing really anything about the band, I liked their Death and Doom sound. The five songs were stable in the aspect of their base, but it also sprinkles in some moments of melody. The melody helps to expand their sound and make it more dynamic. I sincerely hope this project continues on.

Serbian gothic doom act.

Raw death vomit vox over clean, highly melodic yet depressive if not funereal riffs and fills bring the better days of the Peaceville Three to mind, but this one’s actually much catchier than that implies.

Let yourself sway along to the sound of impending doom. Good stuff.

Već više puta na ovim stranicama ponavljana, i možda već pomalo dosadna, sintagma da naša metal scena uglavnom počiva na plećima iskusnijih vukova i sa novim projektom pod nazivom Тишина dobija na potvrdi. Ime jeste novo, ali se iza njega krije prekaljeni metal ratnik Branislav Panić. Branislav je uglavnom najpoznatiji po svom bendu Bane koji prilično uspešno interpretira black/death zvuk u Dissection fazonu, ali čovek nikako nije limitiran u muzičkom ukusu što je preneo i na svoje bendove u kojima je tretirao brutal death ili nu metal, te je došao na red na još jednu strast pretočenu u realnost. Naime, Branislav je i sam veliki obožavalac melodičnog death/doom stila sa predstavnicima kao što su Saturnus, October Tide, stara Katatonia ili Paradise Lost, te je Тишина prvo otiskivanje Branislava u navedene vode.
