No, not in a zillion years I would tell that Metal music would take this path. No way in hell. In  fact, this “Wijde Wijdte” isn’t the first album which features some instrumentals tunes with lots of incidental noises and effects. However, when you come to think, Metal has always done things to amaze and surprise us , hasn’t it?

I know, you are about to tell me that this trend in Metal isn’t that new. Okay, I get it. But, for an old folk as I am, it’s kind of new thing. Everything that comes from the 1990s or so is new to me, if you get what I’m saying. If you look back, all the big ones, you name them as you please, never had an entire album of instrumentals, not even close. Yeah, sure there was a tradition in the 1980s of having at least an instrumental track in an album, but what Omgeving do is pretty different. All eight tracks follow the same line. In fact, they are are only separated in terms of names, because they seem to be a sequence of ideas. If you close your eyes and don’t mention the blanks among them, you’ll think they are one.

“Wijde Wijdte” is an album that proves to you that instrumental music can be as sick as regular ones. Once you are dragged into Omgeving’s vibe there is no easy way out of it but enjoy and travel into the disharmonic waters Omgeving have to show you.

Within metal - particularly the atmospheric side - we’ve seen explorations of space, nature, and all things in between. We’ve seen artists experiment with multiple styles and influences and infusing them with space and the unknown - for instance, Midnight Odyssey and Mesarthim, who focus on cosmic soundscapes in their music. Franck Johanson, a Dutch multi-instrumentalist, has brought forth a new project in this realm – Omgev...

Omgeving are a solo project from the Netherlands that plays an atmospheric form of black metal and this is a review of his 2018 album "Wijde Wijdte" which will be released in December by Hypnotic Dirge Records.
