Coming from Kyiv and active since 2007, Vin de Mia Trix started their career with a crushing and extremely dark funeral doom musical approach. Now, after a four-year hiatus since their previous full-length, the band came up with their newest work “Palimpsests”, and they sure live up to this name! A Palimpsest is a manuscript page (made of parchment) from which the text has been removed, so that the page can be used for another ...

Vocalist Andrew, guitarist Serge (who also takes care of samples), bassist/vocalist/guitarist/pianist Alex and drummer Igor, together they are Vin De Mia Trix. Hailing from Ukraine, Vin De Mia Trix plays a mix of different doom metal styles, but they aren't afraid to cross boundaries with some other subgenres. Since their forming in 2007, they released an EP (El sueño de la razón produce monstruos, 2009), a demo (Promo, 2012),...

Unleashing one of the most monumental Funeral/Epic Doom Metal releases of the last few years, today we have Ukraine’s Vin de Mia Trix and the double LP “Palimpsests”. Featuring over 90 minutes of highly melancholic music, this release is a fourth part aural exploration that traverses through many different styles and influences.

What the fuck is this? A double CD clocking in at 97 minutes spread over four songs. If that won’t turn into a long ride I am not sure what will. Well that long ride seemed a lot shorter. The 97 minutes are over before you notice it. Vin De Mia Trix possesses the art of keeping longs songs interesting. The band operates in the realm of melodic death doom metal. Musically they remind me quite a bit of Offici...

Ukranian Death/Doom metal band Vin De Mia Trix returns with their sophomore album ‘Palimpsests’ which is a huge improvement from their debut effort. This album is a long one at almost 100 minutes but it is a grand intricate concept album of 4 tracks each around the 20 minute mark of great soundscapes and lethargic Death/Doom with an atmospheric emphasis. Check this one out but make sure you have enough time to listen to whole thing.

Vin de Mia Trix from Kyiv in Ukraine play progressive funeral doom, offering one of the year's longest albums.
Palimpsests* is a concept based on multicultural commonalities; Stories, legends and tales, as well as shared customs and practices that appear to be similar despite various beliefs or geographical, cultural, and ethnic differences. A duration of about 1 hour and 38 minutes makes Palimpsests just short of 100 minutes.

Finally, the weekend is upon us. What better way to kick it off than with the latest installment of "Funeral Doom Friday". For those who are new to this column; each week features a new or classic album from the realm of extreme doom. Much of funeral/death doom's might comes from an oppressive emotional weight and the use of death or black metal motifs (played at a trudging pace, of course.) Pioneers like Mournful Congregation, Evoken,...

“Palimpsests” is one of those releases that need time, a lot of time to get under your skin. You see, what we have here is a 100 minute long doom release… The term “doom” is very reductive in Vin de Mia Trix’s case, as in the band’s music one can find hints of various different reflections of music genres that have in common the doom aesthetic. Classic, traditional doom, funeral doom, post metal, atmospheric death metal, all...

Oh man, how come I decided to give this a chance then? There's just 4 tracks, but the songs last for 19,15 to as much as 29,44 (!) minutes. Insane! The music is very slow and meditative, and they call it progressive funeral doom metal. I have to admit that this wasn't so bad after all. I would rather call this dream doom though, and the songs are a little too long for my taste. But I'm glad that it didn't suck anyway. And that's always s...

We last heard from this strangely entitled Ukrainian lot when they dropped debut album ‘Once Hidden From Sight’ back in 2013. It didn’t go down remarkably well and so this one was approached with a certain amount of trepidation especially as it is a whopping film length, double disc, four tracker weighing in at a hefty 97 minutes. With this in mind anyone with half a brain cell should be aware what sort of category to plonk the group i...

Let’s not mince words – this is an absolutely stunning album. It’s an ambitious release too, containing 98 minutes of colossal, weighty, emotive doom metal spread out over only four tracks. ‘Palimpsests’ is epic and adventurous, taking the listener on what is not only an epic journey, but an outright odyssey of texture, rich emotion, and dark atmosphere. Merging together elements of doom metal, post-metal, funeral doom,...

OK - well, this is...sizeable. A double CD package: four tracks occupying well over an hour and a half of music, all wrapped in designs filled with cryptic symbology and iconography, delving into quasi-religious mythological archetypes, and with a whacking great booklet included. In fact, 'sizeable' doesn't really do it justice - let's go with 'bloody enormous', instead.

VdMT, never the most predictable of bands - despite the constancy o...
